Mike Babcock’s Oilers opened with a 6-5 overtime loss to Vancouver before answering with a 9-7 win in the rematch. Edmonton then showed it could play something resembling normal hockey in a 3-1 victory over Seattle. Connor McDavid scored into the empty net after Leon Draisaitl broke a third-period tie.
Edmonton has already won a track meet and a tight one, which should keep Babcock’s blood pressure guessing.
Joel Quenneville’s Ducks opened with a 4-3 road victory over Vegas before beating Florida 3-2 in overtime in their home opener.

Edmonton’s offense can erase plenty of mistakes, although making fewer of them remains the cheaper solution.
The Seattle win was the encouraging part, because Edmonton finally paired its scoring talent with a much cleaner defensive effort.

Devon Levi is confirmed to start for Edmonton after winning each of his first two appearances with the Oilers.

This number works for me because Edmonton isn’t carrying the usual premium I’d expect with this much name recognition. At -129, I can back the Oilers straight up without getting cute with a puck line.
Anaheim deserves respect after its 2-0 start, and this isn’t a Ducks team I’m interested in treating like an automatic fade. But over 60 minutes, Edmonton has more proven ways to find the goal that decides the game. That’s enough for me at this price.
At -129, I’ll take Edmonton’s proven finishers and let Anaheim prove its hot start travels another step.
The Ducks are dangerous enough on special teams that Edmonton can’t spend half the night skating four-on-five. Keep this game mostly at even strength and I like the Oilers’ chances of creating the better scoring opportunities as the night goes along.
And yes, backing Edmonton usually comes with a few moments where you wonder why you voluntarily do this to yourself. Apparently a quiet Oilers ticket would violate some Canadian broadcasting regulation.
I’m still not overthinking -129. I get the more established group, a reasonable road price and enough offensive answers if Anaheim lands the first punch.
