The Detroit Red Wings, coming off a win over Vancouver, head to Calgary to take on the Flames on Friday night.
Calgary, winners of five straight, will look to continue its solid run of games as the team tries to climb back into the top three of the Pacific Division.
Detroit Red Wings
Detroit has all but solidified its stance on tanking the rest of the season by trading away Thomas Vanek, the team’s leading goal-scorer, to the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.
The team has struggled all year and has already lost any shot at the playoffs.

With Vanek gone, the team is left with a string of decent forwards, but no one that can carry the team and win games the rest of the year.
The Red Wings have had a tough time scoring all season, ranking 25th in the league in goals, and that won’t get any better without Vanek.
The scoring now rests on the shoulders of skaters like captain Henrik Zetterberg. He has 14 goals and 34 assists this season, giving him the team lead in points. He has a goal and six assists over his last five games.
The team defense hasn’t been great either. Detroit allows the 21st most goals, giving up an average of 2.95 per game.
Calgary Flames
With five straight wins, the playoffs are in sight for the Calgary Flames. Sitting 4th in the Pacific Division, if this level of play continues, the Flames should be well within reach of the playoffs come the end of March.
The team has looked much better on both sides of the ice, playing great defense and gutting out close victories by any means necessary.
In what has been a disappoint year for Johnny Gaudreau, he has looked much better over the last five games. He has two goals and six assists in that stretch, giving him 13 goals and 30 assists on the year.

Center Sean Monahan continues to play great hockey, with a goal and four assists over his last five games. He is up to 20 goals and 20 assists this season.
Monahan’s good stretch has been backed up by Mikael Backlund. Backlund has 19 goals and 26 assists this year, including four goals and two assists over his last five games.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Calgary is 6-1 SU in the last seven games
- The UNDER is 3-1-1 in Detroit’s last five games
Free Detroit Red Wings vs. Calgary Flames NHL Hockey Prediction:
Calgary has been impressive recently, and the team’s top skaters have looked like top skaters over the past few games. This trend should continue and Calgary should get a W at home.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: OVER 5
There won’t be a lot of defense or quality goaltending going on in this game. Neither team is particularly good in those areas so we should see quite a few goals. I’ll take the OVER in this one.
