It’s not that often we get to see clubs face each other on consecutive nights during the regular season but that’s what we’re getting this weekend. The visiting Detroit Red Wings start things off with a visit to Beantown before hosting the Boston Bruins Sunday night.
These two clubs last met back in October where the Bruins pounded the Red Wings in a 5-1 victory on home ice.
Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings are just playing out the remainder of their games this season as they sit six points out of a Wild Card spot and are behind four teams vying for that final postseason berth. They made their intentions clear at the trade deadline after dealing away multiple key players for picks and prospects.
Detroit is looking to the future, not the here and now.
Offense
Detroit enters this game with the 22nd ranked offense and an average of just under 3.00 goals scored per game this season. Their ability to hit the net has been suspect this year with just 28.8 shots on net per game which ranks 4th last in the league. In terms of power play success, they’re 20th in the NHL with a 20.2% success rate.
The Wings will be missing Tyler Bertuzzi, who they traded to their opponents in the Boston Bruins for a couple of picks, and the grit that he brought to the lineup.
Captain Dylan Larkin was finally signed to an eight-year extension and leads the team with 24 goals and 60 points on the year.
Defense
On the back end, the Red Wings have a 13th ranked defense with 3.25 goals against per game on an average of 30.9 shots against an outing. When it comes to their penalty kill, they rank 19th with a 77.5% kill rate.
GM Steve Yzerman traded away right-handed defenseman Filip Hronek to Vancouver for a collection of picks, which included a 1st rounder in what was viewed as a steal of a deal.
Goaltending
In the crease, it will be Magnus Hellberg on Saturday and Ville Husso on Sunday.
Hellberg has a 4-6-1 record on the season that is paired with a 3.01 goals against average and a save percentage of .899. He’s allowed at least four goals against in each of his last two starts.
Boston Bruins
The Boston Bruins are all in on this season after making positive trades and just having one heck of a year with the team that they started the campaign with.
They’re looking for their 50th win in just 64 contests and are looking to be spoken about in same conversation as some of the greatest teams of all-time. The Bruins are looking to break the mark set by the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens for most points in a regular season (132) and the most wins by a single team at 62, set by the ’77 Habs and the 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning.
This Boston squad has already become the fastest team to reach the 100-point mark, which they did in just their 61st contest of the season.
They are an absolute juggernaut to say the least.
Offense
They’re sporting the second-best offense with an average of 3.76 goals scored per game on 32.9 shots per game. When it comes to special teams, their power play has been potent and ranks inside the top ten with a 23.0% success rate.
As previously mentioned, they acquired Bertuzzi just before the trade deadline and he appears to be fitting in just fine. With his physical play and penchant for stirring the pot, it’s like he was born to be a Bruin.
They have three players who have hit the 20-goal plateau and that includes David Pastrnak and his team leading 45 goals on the season.
Defense
On the defense they’re allowing a league-low 2.10 goals against per game which is .38 better than the next best team in that category. In terms of their penalty kill, well it’s also the best in the league with a success rate of 86.7%.
Defender Charlie McAvoy leads the play from the back end with his 43 points in 50 games.
Goaltending
Through their last 7 games, head coach Jim Montgomery has gone back and forth between Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman, with Swayman getting the most recent start.
Vezina Trophy front runner Linus Ullmark leads the league in multiple categories thanks to his 32-4-1 record, 1.89 GAA and .938 save percentage.
Ullmark is also on a personal 7-game win streak heading into the weekend.
