This match-up shows the tale of two teams and two completely different seasons.
The Dallas Stars entered the year with lofty expectations to improve on an impressive showing last season, something they’ve undoubtedly done.
On the other end of the ice, we have the Vancouver Canucks who have began the season on a terrible skid and didn’t see much improvement as the year went on. Now, as the season winds down, they’re actually playing quite well and collecting points against teams who are in a playoff position.
Many in Canucks nation that were hoping for a rebuild won’t get it and, as previously mentioned, they’re collecting points at the wrong time of the year and thus hurting their chances for a higher draft pick in a class that’s projected to have a high ceiling.
That being said, it makes for one heck of a match-up as we have the Stars who are looking to put some separation between them and the Minnesota Wild for the top spot in the Central Division.
The Canucks have been fun to watch since Thatcher Demko’s return at the end of February which coincidentally came in Dallas.
To paraphrase D-Generation X, Let’s Break it Down!
Dallas Stars
The Stars have been terrific on the road this season with a 20-8-5 away from the state of Texas this campaign. They’ve won 5 straight road games and have a recent record of 6-1 through their past seven contests. That includes an absolute beatdown of the potent Buffalo Sabres which came in the form of a 10-4 victory.
Offense
Up front, they’ve scored at least 4 goals in each of their past 8 games and rank inside the top ten as they’re averaging 3.45 goals scored per game this season.
Dallas’ power play ranks 6th in the league with a 24.0% success rate on the season.
Jason Robertson leads the team with 39 goals, 46 assists and 85 points on the year.

Defense
In their own end of the ice, they have the 5th best defense on the season after averaging just 2.64 goals against.
When it comes to defensive special teams, they’re tied for the third-best penalty kill in the league with an 83.3% conversion rate when short-handed.
Goaltending
As expected, Jake Oettinger has gotten the bulk of the starts for Dallas but after playing in Seattle Monday night, we should expect rookie Matt Murray to get the nod here tonight. Murray doesn’t have a lot of experience in the big leagues with just a single game played. That came against the Chicago Blackhawks in a 5-2 Dallas win.
Vancouver Canucks
Don’t look now but the Canucks are on a 4-game win streak that has seen them score at least 4 goals in three of those victories. Recently at home, they have a 5-2 record and it all started with a key 4-1 win against the powerhouse Toronto Maple Leafs.
Offense
Overall on the offensive side of the puck, the Canucks have been humming with a goals for average of 3.34 scored which ranks 10th in the NHL. On the man advantage, they currently rank 11th with a 22.6 conversion rate when a man up.
After trading away Captain Bo Horvat and his 31 goals with the team, we’ve seen the emergence of Andrei Kuzmenko who leads the team with 32 goals on the season.
Elias Pettersson is right there with Kuzmenko as Petey already has 30 goals and a team leadings 82 points in 63 games this season.
They’ve also been getting offense from their defense in the form of Quinn Hughes. Hughes is 2nd on the team in points with 61 in 61 games this year.
Defense
Their struggles on the back end have been well documented this season after posting a bloated average of 3.82 goals against which has them at 2nd worst in the league.
It doesn’t help that they have the worst penalty kill in the league which is operating at just a 68.8% success rate on the season.
Goaltending
In net, Thatcher Demko is on a personal three-game win streak and has a 4-1 record paired with a 2.21 GAA and a .928 save percentage since returning from injury.

Free Dallas Stars vs. Vancouver Canucks NHL Prediction
This has the feeling of two offensively gifted teams who are heating up heading into this matchup.
Vancouver took their previous meeting in a 5-4 OT thriller at the end of February. We saw Jake Oettinger in net during their first encounter but with an unknown like the Stars’ Matt Murray in net, I’m feeling like the Canucks will take advantage of the rookie netminder.
The Canucks have scored at least three goals in each of their last four games and absolutely toyed with the Ottawa Senators in their most recent game, a 5-2 victory.
Wear some shades because that goal light is gonna be blinding.
Take the over.
