(25-29-10) Dallas Stars vs. Florida Panthers (29-23-11)
The Dallas Stars won 50 games and a playoff series last year, but it looks like they will miss out on postseason play in 2017. The defending Central division champions are now ahead of only Colorado in the division this year.
As for the Panthers they are in the middle of a tight playoff race in the Atlantic and for the final wildcard spot in the Eastern conference.
They are getting some help from players you wouldn’t expect as well.
Some are having trouble pinpointing why a team so strong in the regular season last year has been so feeble this year. It would be easy to point fingers at their 2 goalie system, except that system wasn’t very good last year either and they still won 50 games.
The jury is still out on how 2 goalie systems work, but Dallas keeps trekking along with Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi sharing duties. You can argue that each goalie has seen a slight drop in numbers, but hardly by an significant measure.
It might simply be the case that many of Dallas’ core guys have regressed mildly this year. Jamie Benn scored 41 goals last year and won’t crack 30 this year. It’s looking like Seguin might not make it to 30 goals either.
When Dallas traded away Patrick Eaves to Anaheim at the deadline they were symbolically waving the white flag on this year.
Don’t look now but the Florida Panthers might get into the playoffs again this year. Last year’s Atlantic division winners are within striking distance of the last wildcard spot, and possibly even the 3rd seed in their division.
Their playoff hopes took a blow this week when Luongo left Thursday’s game against the Flyers due to the dreaded lower body injury. Reimer had 35 saves as the Panthers lost in a shootout.
The thing is, James Reimer has actually been outperforming Roberto Luongo. All the same, Luongo is not a guy you put on the bench during the stretch no matter how good the backup is playing. With that being said however, Reimer is the hotter goaltender, so Luongo’s injury may be a blessing in disguise.
Reimer’s .922 save percentage and 2.43 GAA this year in 28 games tops Luongo’s .915 save percentage and 2.68 GAA in 40 games. There’s nothing like two goalies trying to outplay one another to help lift a team into the playoffs.

Free Dallas Stars vs. Florida Panthers NHL Hockey Prediction:
The Panthers have guys playing like their whole careers depend on it. Reimer wants to show the world he can be a starter, Vincent Trocheck wants to show he’s got another level, and Jaromir Jagr wants to show he can still compete at his age.
Meanwhile on the other bench Dallas is coming to terms with a failed season. Panthers are going to take this one and keep working towards the playoffs.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Florida -140
Panthers aren’t a great scoring team, but they have a hot goalie (Reimer, not Luongo) with something to prove.
