The Dallas Stars took a 3-2 series lead in their Western Conference First Round matchup against the Calgary Flames with a 2-1 victory at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Tuesday.
They are now in position to put the series away and move on. While favored, they did just manage to squeak out the win Tuesday. So how likely are they to end the series in Game 6?
Calgary are on the ropes, but they don’t look quite out, so let’s take a look at what the respective teams have going for them at this point in the series.
Dallas Stars
Goalie Anton Khudobin made 28 saves against the somewhat anemic Flames offense, and has now gone 3-3 for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 2.41 GAA and a .917 save percentage.
Dallas opened the scoring with Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn in a two on one rush on the power play, followed by defenseman John Klingberg. The Flames did score in between those goals, but the than that the Stars defense shut down the Flames.
Still, Dallas, as noted, only just eked out the win. Calgary could surprise them if they can’t get more production out of their offense.
Calgary Flames
Calgary was badly outplayed in the first period in Game 5, getting outshot 14-7, but they did show signs of life as the game wore on.
Switching up the top two lines helped, with Tobias Rieder joined Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan on the top line, with Elias Lindholm bumped down to play alongside Andrew Mangiapane and Backlund on the second trio.
Rieder has three goals in the post-season — all short-handed — and has been elevated to the top six in place of Matthew Tkachuk.
Tkachuk, the notorious agitator and Flames top scorer in the regular season, hasn’t played since he was knocked woozy on a hit late in Game 2, and he has been missed, especially in these later games when the stick work starts to get a little more vicious.
Free Dallas Stars vs. Calgary Flames NHL Prediction:
Calgary still have some life in them. They lost a close one, but instead of demoralizing them, it might just show them they have a chance against Dallas. Talbot will have to have a great game to hold them in, but that’s not at all beyond the realm of possibility.
