This will be the first playoff series that the Stars and Flames will drawn in against one another since the Stars relocated to Dallas in 1993.
Coming into this series one team is playing really well, while the other team is looking for answers, and in case you haven’t figured out which is which, Calgary is the former and Dallas the latter.
Dallas Stars
From a goal-scoring standpoint, Dallas is paced by the 22-year-old rookie Denis Gurianov with 20 goals on the season. Gurianov was the Stars’ only 20-goal man. That’s a meager output for a team looking to win Lord Stanley’s Cup.
Dallas shouldn’t be struggling on offense. In terms of name brand players they should have the edge on offense, and on paper they do. The key phrase there being, ‘on paper’. The big “if” in the room is if the Stars can generate results from Seguin, Pavelski, Radulov, and Benn.
Expect the Stars to do all they can to make this series a grinding, defensive war with the Flames. And the Stars have the players on the blue line and in goal to accomplish this.
Dallas only real strategy to win the series, is to make goals extremely difficult to come by for a speedy Flames team.
Calgary Flames
The forward depth for the Calgary forward group is pretty evenly spread out from a production standpoint. The Flames are led by leading point producer Matthew Tkachuk, who scored 61 points in 69 games, 23 of those points via goals.
Then there is the Flames’ top assist man and playmaker, Johnny Gaudreau, who had 40 assists, with 18 goals, for 58 points. Both players are great all-around young hockey players.
In the pipes for the Flames they have elected to go with Cam Talbot over Dave Rittich. Talbot has been a surprise turning in a .945 save percentage and 1.51 GAA in four games against the Jets in the qualifying round.
Free Dallas Stars vs. Calgary Flames NHL Prediction:
The Flames have stepped up their game in this unusual playoff format, with unexpected stellar play in net. This allows for their young speedy offense to open up the game. They need to draw out the Stars blue liners and open up the zone for scoring chances.
Dallas, alternatively, has to play a very patient game and choose their scoring opportunities sparingly. Tcachuk can be an irritant to opposing teams, but he can also be encouraged to take bad penalties, look for Dallas to give him just that encouragement.
However, in the end Calgary is strong enough in net to hold off Dallas’s lackluster offense and have the ability to put a lot off goals on net at the other end of the rink.
