There were high expectations for both of these two teams entering the 2016-17 season, however neither have gotten off to the start they’d hoped. Dallas currently sits in second-last in the Central Division with 11 points, already 8 behind the leading Chicago Blackhawks.
Calgary’s young core was expected to take a giant leap, especially now that their crease situation was solidified with the acquisition of Brian Elliot.
Yet they sit in third-last in the weak Pacific Division and are also 8 points behind their respective division-leader and Alberta rivals, Edmonton Oilers.
For a team that led the league in scoring just a season ago, Dallas is not close to repeating that feat at their current pace.
The Stars averaged 3.23 goals-per-game last year, but are currently at a 2.5 mark, which ranks them at the 20th best this year.
On the other side, they haven’t been able to keep the puck out of their net to make up for the drop in scoring, as they sit 26th overall in goals against at 3.5 on average.
Dallas’ top guns are scoring still, with Tyler Seguin registering 7g+7a for 14 points in 13 games, which sits him amongst the top-10 in league scoring.
Jamie Benn has only tallied nine points thus far, only two being goals, which should positively regress as he’s registered 41, 35 and 34 goals across the past three seasons, respectively.
Simply put, their second-line duo of JasonSpezza and Patrick Sharp need to produce more than they are right now, with Spezza tallying just five points on the year and Sharp with just one (in four games, however).
The Stars goaltending situation is a mess, with both Antti Niemi and Kari Lehtonen owning save percentages in the .800’s. Niemi, .892 SV%, owns the better save percentage and record at 3-2-1, though the 3.65 GAA is below Lehtonen’s mark of 3.28. Lehtonen has registered a .878 SV% amd just a 1-4-2 record on the season, though the defensive unit may also be partially to blame for these numbers.
Calgary has done a great job of building a solid young roster from the groud-up in the post-Jarome Iginla era.
Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau were selected by the Flames and developed within the franchise into the NHL superstars they are today.
Gaudreau led the team in scoring last year, just his second full season in the league, with 78 points in 79 games played.
Monahan added 63 points in 81 games while playing a solid two-way game up the middle along side his linemate “Johnny Hockey.” The duo has had a slow start to this season, though, seeing Gaudreau tally eight points and Monahan just five through 14 games.
The defensive core for Calgary is a solid young one that can grow with their exciting talent up front.
Calgary made the astute trade for Dougie Hamilton, a 6’5 right shot defenseman who can skate and play in all-situations, a type of player that every team needs and covets. He’s joined by Mark Giordano, TD Brodie and Dennis Wideman to round-out the Flames’ top-4.
Brian Elliot was acquired this summer to solidify the Flames’ crease, but has had a rough start to his time in Cowtown.
Elliot currently has a .887 SV% and 3.33 GAA on the year, to go along with a 3-6-0 record in his nine games played.

Free Dallas Stars vs Calgary Flames NHL Hockey Prediction
While neither team has been good this year, there is certainly the talent in each lineup to make this an exciting game to watch. One of the two teams will improve on their respective home or road records, as each sit well below the .500 mark.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
There is a ton of top-end offensive talent in this game with the likes of Tyter Seguinm Jamie Benn, Jason Spezza, Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan.
Each of these two defense and penalty kill units rank amongst the worst in the league, neither of the goalies have a SV% in the .900’s, and the Dallas defense certainly leaves something to be desired.
