Two teams with three game streaks meet up on Friday night at the Canadian Life Centre. For the Jets it’s a good streak winning three straight including a 5-0 win over the defending Stanley Cup champion Avalanche on Tuesday night.
Columbus on the other hand has lost three in a row as they sit in the bottom of the Metropolitan with just 16 points on the season, second fewest in the NHL behind Anaheim. What’s even more concerning for the Blue Jackets is that their three consecutive losses have all come at home, and now they try to snap that skid with a 1-4-1 road record.
Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets really didn’t take advantage of some very favorable scheduling last month. Columbus just wrapped up a stretch of seven straight home games, going a decent 3-3-1 but not good enough when you’re a last place team.
Overall Columbus had just two road games the entire month of November, a 6-3 loss to Colorado and falling 4-3 in OT at the Islanders. They’ve traveled just once since the November 4th game at the Avalanche and despite having the last three days off it still takes some adjustment getting back out on the road.
Maybe a change of scenery is what the Blue Jackets need, as their offense is sputtering in scoring two goals or less in four of their last five. Columbus has one of the worst power play success rates in the NHL (16%) and they don’t even average 30 SOG per game.
It’s going to be hard for a struggling – or just bad – offense to get on track not only on the road, but also against a Jets defense that ranks 7th in the NHL allowing just 2.6 goals/game. Winnipeg is also 8-2 on their own ice this season.
Winnipeg Jets
Columbus comes in rested having not played since Monday, but the Jets have also been idle since a 5-0 throttling of Colorado on Tuesday night. Blake Wheeler tallied a hat trick in that game as the Jets rattled off a third straight win.
Winnipeg’s offense is clicking on this three game stretch, also beating Dallas 5-4 and Chicago 7-2 before the 5-0 win against the Avs. Columbus goaltender Joonas Korpisalo has allowed 15 goals in his last four starts, so Friday’s contest is another great opportunity for the Jets to pad their offensive stats.
Not only does the Winnipeg offense get a favorable matchup on Friday night, but so does goaltender Connor Hellebuyck against a Columbus offense that has scored more than two goals just once in their last five games.
Hellebuyck just had a 40 save shutout vs. a great Colorado offense so he should be good to go here. That being said he did just serve up 10 goals over a two game span against Minnesota and Dallas, but both of those games were also on the road.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Blue Jackets are 17-35 in their last 52 overall
- Blue Jackets are 6-21 in their last 27 Friday games
- Over is 14-6 in Blue Jackets last 20 overall
- Jets are 12-2 in their last 14 home games
- Blue Jackets are 2-5 in the last 7 meetings in Winnipeg
4* Free NHL Betting Pick Blue Jackets vs Winnipeg: Over 6.5
It’s going to be hard for Columbus to get a win on the road Friday night, but at the same time the Jets are way too pricy at -249. Instead the best value on this game is on the over.
Hellebuyck stood on his head Tuesday against Colorado, but he’s also still faced at least 39 shots in three of his last four starts. We know Korpisalo is going to feel the heat as well so this one looks like a big number could be put up.
