A geographical inter-divisional rivalry takes place on Monday night in Motown, as Ohio’s Blue Jackets travel to Michigan to take on the rebuilding Wings. Maybe there’ll be some added rancor among the fans, after the higher-ranked Michigan Wolverines’ shameful beatdown at the hand of nemesis Ohio State this past weekend on the college gridiron. OSU is located – where else? – in Columbus. Red Wings fans would love some small measure of retribution in Detroit’s new hockey arena.
Columbus Blue Jackets
The Jackets have been up and down, but they are tough to play against because they are big, strong and can skate. Head coach John Tortorella, for all his warts and keen media soundbites, does preach a disciplined, gritty style of play. Those elements have the Blue Jackets currently sitting second in the Metro division with 28 points.
Columbus is powered primarily by a couple of Russians, winger Artemi Panarin and goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. The Jackets have an excellent, unheralded top line, which doesn’t get as much publicity as most other top units around the league: Panarin, Cam Atkinson and Pierre-Luc Dubois makes up an elite top line. On the back end, Seth Jones and Zach Werenski are formidable.
Detroit Red Wings
Things were supposed to be a shambles in the post-Coach Babcock/Pavel Datsyuk/Henrik Zetterberg era, and they’ve at least been better than that. The Wings are sixth in the Atlantic, but it happens to be a division loaded with elite teams (including the out-of-nowhere Buffalo Sabres, go figure). Detroit has been getting steady goals from Andreas Anthanasiou, Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha. The Wings have a couple of players, but depth is an issue.
Veteran goaltender Jimmy Howard has also been stout, which has led to the Wings staying in most games this season. They will need to have guys continue playing over their pay grade to have a hope of staying in it, but the Red Wings will probably come back down to Earth eventually.

Free Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Detroit Red Wings NHL Prediction:
In a lot of ways, the Blue Jackets look like what the Red Wings aspire to be in a season or two. The time to make hay for Columbus is now, before the talented Russians bolt in free agency.
It won’t be easy because there are a lot of good teams in the Eastern Conference, but it takes victories over middling opoosition like Detroit to cement the status of Torts’s men.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Jackets -1.5
Detroit will give them its best at home, and maybe the Wings slip a couple past ‘Bobs’, but the smart money is on the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets in this contest.
