Columbus is just a point behind the Blackhawks however, getting back on the winning track with a 3-2 win over Carolina on Monday. That gives the Hurricanes an extra night to prepare for this visit to the United Center.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Columbus is right in the thick of things in the Central, but they come into Chicago in a little bit of disarray after the benching of Patrik Laine following a verbal dispute with an assistant coach. The teams says they’ve put it behind them however.
Laine has reason to be frustrated, he played one game for Winnipeg this year, got hurt, got traded, and now seems unhappy in a new home. He has netted 3 goals for Carolina in the last three games however.
Columbus is in a familiar place, as they just split a series in the Windy City two weekends ago. The Blue Jackets ended up scoring just three goals in the two contests, but Joonas Korpisalo stopped 30 of 31 shots in game one to secure the win.
Korpisalo started on both ends of a back to back this week for Columbus, getting rocked for 6 goals on 26 shots on Sunday before bouncing back to allow just 2 goals on 24 shots in Monday’s tilt.
Chicago Blackhawks
Chicago’s offense gets a test on Thursday, as Korpisalo has allowed 2 goals or less in all three of his road starts this season including one against Chicago.
The Blackhawks swept a 2-game series in Dallas this week, but did so with just 2 goals scored in each game, both of which were decided in OT. That’s a nice will to win, but also an ode to some great goaltending.
It was a tag team effort in net for the Hawks vs. the Stars. Malcolm Subban got a somewhat surprising start on Sunday but responded by stopping 30 of 31 shots. Kevin Lankinen went Tuesday, turning away 34 of 35 SOG.
Lankinen has been a surprising find for Chicago, posting a .933 save percentage and 2.17 GAA on the year. The rookie allowed 3 goals on 60 SOG in the first two games vs. Columbus, but was hit for 7 in two games vs. the Hurricanes.

If Laine can get right that gives the Blue Jackets an edge, but there aren’t many better counters in the league than Patrick Kane. The Chicago RW has 10 points in the last six games.
