One of the new, young, agile hunters for the crown travels to challenge the old ‘King of the Pride’ on Tuesday night, to use a metaphor of the wild. The Pens have done a ton of winning over the past several years, but the party might be coming to an end, while the Avs only seem to be just rounding into their lofty potential. Should make for entertaining spectatorship in Pittsburgh this week.
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado’s top line of Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Gabe Landeskog is getting better known by the day in even casual NHL circles, as they are dynamic enough for all to take notice. MacKinnon and Rantanen lead the league in scoring, with former Kitchener Ranger Landeskog not far behind. You aren’t totally wrong to call the Avs a one-line team, but there are some developing players behind the Big Three, as well.

Defenceman Tyson Barrie is the team’s bell-cow blueliner, while centers Carl Soderberg and Alex Kerfoot provide some nice secondary scoring to the top line and PP unit. In net, Russian Semyon Varlamov has been very good, posting a 2.23 goals against and a save percentage of .930. It translates to a club that sits first in the strong Central division and head coach Jared Bednar, executive (and club legend) Joe Sakic and everyone else want you to know that the Avalanche is here to stay.
Pittsburgh Penguins
On Tuesday night, the veteran Pens might have something to say about that. Co-future Hall of Famers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin need no introduction, and they’ve continued to produce like you’d expect. The problem in Pittsburgh has lied in keeping the puck out of their net. Goalie Matt Murray hasn’t met expectations, and just recently went on injured reserve. This hurts doubly because the goalie the Pens gave up to showcase Murray, Marc-Andre Fleury, has been consistently awesome for the Vegas Golden Knights and took them to a Cup final last season.

As a result, Pitt is relying on 27-year old rookie Casey DeSmith, a New Hampshire native who has decent stats through a dozen games or so this year. DeSmith has less than 25 games to his name in the NHL. It’s fair to say that, despite encouraging early returns, he’s an unproven commodity. It means that the Penguins must out-score their troubles, which they’re still capable of doing with a Top 10-ranked goals for stat (3.32 per game) and power-play unit.

Free Colorado Avalanche vs. Pittsburgh Penguins NHL Prediction:
The Avalanche are getting a ton of credit in 2018-19 and rightfully so, but I just have a feeling the cagey veteran Penguins are going to assert themselves at home in this game. Pittsburgh already lost the first leg of a home-and-home this past week against Colorado, and spirits are even more agitated after a loss to the hated Flyers over the weekend.
I could see Crosby, Malkin and maybe Kessel putting on vintage performances against the speedy young bucks from the Rockies. We haven’t seen much, but if DeSmith can play about as well as he’s show recently, it could be enough to vault Pittsburgh to a home win.
