It’s not very often you see the Colorado Avalanche offense get completely shut down. That’s exactly what happened Monday night in Uniondale though as the Avs were shut out for the 1st time since November 2nd.
Now Colorado must regroup on 0 days rest and make the short trip to Madison Square Garden. Oddsmakers are still giving the Avs an edge vs. a very bad Rangers team, listing Colorado as -160 favorites here.

The Rangers at least have a fatigue advantage on Tuesday, having had the last 2 nights off after wrapping up a 4-game road swing. Can the Avs regain their solid road presence, or is the 0 days rest going to catch up with them?
Colorado Avalanche
The Avs key players had been hot heading into Monday’s game with the Islanders. That game could have been seen as a trap though with Colorado just a -119 favorite despite two solid wins in a row.
Nonetheless, former Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov completely shut down his former team, stopping all 32 Avalanche shots. Pavel Francouz wasn’t bad for the Avs though, allowing just one score on 33 shots.
Francouz starting means Philipp Grubauer will be available on the back-to-back Tuesday. Grubauer was in net for the Avs’ wins over the defending champ Blues and the streaking Devils last week.
Colorado’s #1 scoring offense should be able to bounce back vs. New York’s #28 ranked unit in goals against and 30th in SOG allowed. The Rangers gave up 4+ goals in 3 of 4 on their last road trip.
New York Rangers
The Rangers have to take at least a little bit of solace in knowing the Islanders shut down the high-powered Colorado offense on Monday. The Avs had scored 4+ goals in 5 of 6 games prior.
New York didn’t have a very successful 4-game trip through Canada. Well they did score a 4-3 OT win over Toronto at +205 to start the swing but have dropped the last 3.
At least David Quinn’s team has had Sunday and Monday off, a factor that could be huge vs. Colorado playing on consecutive nights.
Another reason Colorado is such a huge favorite even on a b2b is because the Rangers will go with goaltending prospect Igor Shesterkin on Tuesday in his NHL debut. The Russian is one of the best prospects in the league however.

The Avs have enough talent to balance out any fatigue they may be feeling after the hard fought loss to the Islanders Monday. Mackinnon, Landeskog, Rantanen, Makar, and Girard to name a few can all carry the torch on any given night.
