Colorado has been able to stay afloat in the Western Conference thanks to their torrid start. The Avs are just 3 off the pace from St. Louis in the Central but have a tough matchup in St. Paul on Thursday.
The Wild have flip-flopped wins over their last 7. That’s good for a team that started the season so slowly but bad because their last game was a 4-1 win at Buffalo and a loss is due.
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado will take any win they can get right now, biding their team until reinforcements can return. Most teams that lose 2 of their top 3 offensive threats would embark upon that same strategy.
Not only are the Avs without Mikko Rantanen (ankle) and Gabriel Landeskog (lower body) as they’ve been for over a month, Colin Wilson joined them on November 7th and now Tyson Jost has missed the last two (upper-body).
Nathan Mackinnon is one of the greats of the game, but how much longer can he continue to carry the Colorado offense? Mackinnon leads Colorado with 31 points, with 9 in the last 4 games.
[dfads params=’groups=234&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Mackinnon obviously isn’t the only reason Colorado comes into this game having won 5 of 6. Left-winger Andre Burakovsky has netted 5 goals the last 3 games and rookie Cale Makar had 4 points to cue the OT victory over Vancouver two games ago.
Colorado’s injuries have also extended to their goaltenders but Philipp Grubauer returned Tuesday after a two week absence and held Calgary to 2 goals on 33 shots.
Minnesota Wild
Minnesota is still in last place in the Central, but they’ve at least shown signs of being ‘not as horrible as you’d expect’ as of late. Most of the cause for optimism for the rest of the season has come from G Devan Dubnyk finding his groove a bit.
The veteran goaltender has held 3 of the last 5 opponents to 2 goals or less. The Avs still have a sound scoring attack though, netting 4+ in 4 of 6. Minnesota has climbed into the top 13 in SOG against and has a top 10 penalty kill.

Can the Wild survive in a potential high scoring affair is the bigger question? Zach Parise has stepped up nicely as of late with 4 goals in the last 3 games – he has just 8 total on the year.
Minnesota’s leading scorer on the season is Eric Staal with 15 points. He has just one point in the last 5 games though. At least the Wild have shown improvement at home on the season, boasting a 4-2-1 record in St. Paul.
NHL Betting Trends:

- Avalanche are 4-1 last 5 vs. Western Conference
- Avalanche are 1-5 last 6 as a road favorite
- Wild are 7-16 lasts 23 home games

Free Minnesota Wild vs. Colorado Avalanche NHL Prediction:
Colorado has been on a nice little run, but at what point do those injuries start to take their toll on the remaining players who have been exerted to the fullest? Maybe Thursdayt vs. a Wild team trying desperately to find their stride.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Wild -115
Dubnyk is questionable here, but if he goes it gives Minnesota the edge.
