The Colorado Avalanche, just two years removed from a playoff berth, find themselves with the NHL’s worst record as they head to Los Angeles to do battle with the Kings.
Colorado Avalanche
It’s been a season to forget for the Colorado Avalanche. With just 28 points, they’re 10 points behind the Arizona Coyotes for the NHL’s next-to-worst record. It’s not even close.
On both offense and defense, the Avalanche have been atrocious. Colorado is actually dead last in both goals scored and goals allowed per game with a -1.35 differential each game on average.

The Avs lost 12 of their last 13 games heading into the All-Star Break with the lone victory coming against the lowly New York Islanders on Jan. 6. Since then, Colorado has lost seven straight games where they’ve been outscored 26-14.
To make matters worse, the Avalanche have just two wins against the Pacific Division. Overall, they possess a 2-9-2 record versus Pacific Divisional foes.
Los Angeles Kings
The absence of Jonathan Quick has weighed heavily on the Kings’ record this season. With 52 points, L.A. finds itself a single point behind Calgary for the Western Conference’s final playoff spot.
Offense has also been a problem for the Kings. Despite having forwards Jeff Carter and Anze Kopitar, the Kings rank 22nd in the league in goals with 2.49 per game. Carter is tied for 2nd in the NHL with 24 goals, but the offense has been lacking outside of his production.
Thankfully, the Kings possess an incredible defense that ranks 5th in goals allowed and 1st in shots on goal allowed. While Peter Budaj has done an incredible job spelling Quick, backup netminder Jeff Zatkoff has been absolutely terrible.

While Budaj is 22-14-3 with a 2.06 GAA, Zatkoff is 2-7-1 with a 2.94 GAA.
Drew Doughty remains the anchor of L.A.’s defense, but he’s still a constant contributor on offense as well. His 28 points is the second-most on the team, one point ahead of fellow defenseman Alec Martinez.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Avalanche are 1-12 SU in their last 13 games.
- Avalanche are 2-9-2 vs. the Pacific Division.
- Avalanche are 3-2 on back-to-back games.
- Kings are 14-8-1 at home.
- Kings O/U is 4-11-5 in their last 20 games.
Free Colorado Avalanche vs. Los Angeles Kings NHL Hockey Prediction:
Any team playing the Avalanche will be a heavy favorite, so taking the money line doesn’t seem wise. The Avs actually beat the Kings 4-1 the last time the two teams played in November, but 2.5 months makes a huge difference.
The Kings have been an UNDER machine this year, due in large part to their stout defense.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: UNDER 5 goals
I like the UNDER in this spot as well, especially because there’s much more value in the total than there is the L.A. money line.
