This was a spicy rivalry in the late 1990s and early 2000s – who remembers those crazy goalie fights?? But I suppose time heals all wounds. Now, it’s just a standard Sunday night match-up between a high-flying visitor and a rebuilding home squad. But you know what? – Detroit has enough pieces to at least keep it interesting.
The Avs can fly, especially with their top line of Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Gabe Landeskog. It’s at least the most prolific line in the NHL – lots of ink gets spilled over Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak in Boston and Marner-Tavares-anyone with a pulse in Toronto, but MacKinnon and Rantanen are still tops in the league in points. Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid get all the love, but MacKinnon is legitimately one of the best players in the entire NHL.
Other players are coming along too at high elevation – so the Avalanche certainly are trending in the right direction for this year and the future. Colorado just lost a tough 3-2 result to St. Louis, but before that it won its previous six games, so the Avs look great lately. Will they get back in the win column in Motown?
Detroit Red Wings
The Wings are still putting the pieces together after those multiple decades of playoff appearances, but it looks like head coach Jeff Blashill’s guys are coming along quicker than expected. But – just for reference – Dylan Larkin leads Detroit in points with 21, and Colorado’s Rantanen has 43. Not a misprint.
There’s other decent players on the Red Wings; Andreas Athanasiou is blazing fast and can score the puck, and Anthony Mantha is a budding really nice player in the league. Yet, Detroit’s depth pales in comparison to the visitors, and Wings goalie Jimmy Howard will have to stand on his end if they are to thwart that lethal top line of the Avs.

Free Colorado Avalanche vs. Detroit Red Wings NHL Prediction:
It’s hard to not picture the Avalanche scoring a few goals in this contest. This means, therefore, that Detroit must solve solid Colorado netminder Semyon Varlamov themselves, otherwise it will be a runaway for the light coloured jerseys.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Colorado +152
Unless Detroit can somehow stifle that relentless Colorado ‘Mac-Landy-Rants’ line, I just don’t see the home team winning this game. It’ll come out in the wash tomorrow evening in Detroit.
