Here’s why I’m backing a Colorado PL bet below in my Avalanche Flames free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Avalanche vs. Flames Gameday
The Colorado Avalanche visit the Calgary Flames on Thursday, October 8, at Scotiabank Saddledome. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 PM ET on KTVD-20, Altitude and Altitude+.
Colorado enters at 2-1-0 under Jared Bednar, while Ryan Huska’s Flames remain winless at 0-3-0. The Avalanche are playing their second road game in as many nights, giving Calgary a scheduling advantage.
Colorado suffered its first loss Wednesday in Winnipeg, falling 3-2 when Kyle Connor scored with one minute remaining. The Avalanche generated plenty of pressure but couldn’t get the result. Now they have to regroup without much time to dwell on it.
Colorado brings the better early form, while Calgary gets the benefit of considerably fresher legs.
The Flames return home after a 6-1 defeat in Seattle on Monday. Morgan Frost supplied their only goal, and Calgary’s defensive problems continued.
Both clubs know this matchup well, with Colorado enjoying the better of their recent meetings. Calgary needs a response in front of its home crowd, preferably one that doesn’t involve fishing the puck out of its own net all evening.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Calgary Flames Odds & Previous Games
Colorado opened as a -231 moneyline favorite, while Calgary was listed at +194.
The Avalanche opened -1.5 at +107 on the puck line, with the Flames getting +1.5 at -129. Bettors backing Colorado must decide whether the additional payout is worth requiring a two-goal victory.
Colorado began the season with an 8-4 win over Los Angeles and a 6-1 victory against St. Louis. Calgary has dropped its first three games, losing twice to Seattle and once to Vancouver.
The Avalanche swept all three meetings last season, including their visit to Calgary. They’ve established a strong recent record against this opponent, although past results won’t do much defending Thursday night.
Colorado also owns a 43-14-9 record in the second game of back-to-backs since 2020-21. That’s encouraging for a team facing a quick turnaround, particularly with the Flames having several days to prepare.

Flames Stats
Calgary has scored only three goals through three games while allowing 16, leaving plenty of room for improvement at both ends.
Joel Farabee leads the Flames with two assists. Ryan Strome, Morgan Frost and Matt Coronato have supplied the goals, but Calgary needs more consistent production from its forwards.
The Flames have scored twice on the power play, accounting for most of their early offense. At even strength, sustained pressure has been difficult to establish.
Calgary has also struggled with defensive coverage, allowing too many dangerous opportunities. It’s difficult to develop much confidence when every breakdown seems to end with the opposing team celebrating.
Avalanche Stats
Colorado has scored 16 goals through three games, getting contributions from throughout its lineup.
Nathan MacKinnon leads the Avalanche with five points, including two goals and three assists. Artturi Lehkonen has three goals, while Parker Kelly has contributed four points.
Cale Makar continues to drive Colorado’s transition game from the blue line. The Avalanche move the puck quickly and have several forwards capable of finishing chances off the rush.
Colorado’s depth gives opponents more problems than simply deciding who gets stuck defending MacKinnon.
Newcomers Jaden Schwartz and Fedor Svechkov have also made an early contribution. Both recorded a goal and an assist against Winnipeg, giving Bednar another encouraging sign despite the defeat.
Avalanche vs. Flames Goalie Matchup
Mackenzie Blackwood started Colorado’s first three games, including Wednesday’s loss in Winnipeg.
Blackwood made 16 saves against the Jets after stopping 25 of 26 shots against St. Louis. Scott Wedgewood provides another option if Bednar chooses to rotate his goalies on consecutive nights.
Calgary has used Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley during its difficult start. Wolf has surrendered 12 goals across two appearances, while Cooley allowed three in his lone outing.

Thursday’s starting assignments were not confirmed in the official material reviewed. Colorado’s quick turnaround makes its decision particularly interesting.
Calgary needs better defensive support regardless of who starts. The Flames cannot afford repeated coverage breakdowns against an opponent with this much finishing ability.
For bettors comparing the puck line at their preferred sportsbooks, the starting goalie announcements deserve attention. A strong performance in net can make a substantial difference when one goal separates a winning ticket from a losing one.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Calgary Flames bottom line: Colorado has the deeper offense and stronger early form, while Calgary must improve its defensive coverage to stay competitive.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Calgary Flames Hockey Betting Trends

- Also, the Flames have allowed six goals in two of their last three games.
- The Avalanche have scored six or more goals in two of their last three games.

- In their last three games, the Avalanche have allowed four or more goals twice.
Avalanche Flames Free Pick: Colorado Avalanche -1.5
Here is my Avalanche Flames free pick: Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (+107). I’m willing to lay the puck and a half rather than pay -231 for the straight win.
The number makes sense because Calgary has struggled to respond when opponents take control. Colorado has enough speed to keep the Flames defending, and that’s where I see the biggest advantage for this wager.
I want the Avalanche getting ahead and forcing Calgary to take chances. Once the Flames start pressing, Colorado has the skill to create another scoring opportunity rather than spending the entire third period protecting a one-goal lead.
Give me Colorado attacking a team that’s already had plenty of trouble keeping the puck out of its net.
The back-to-back is worth respecting, but it doesn’t automatically make this a bad spot for Colorado. Bednar’s teams have handled these situations well over the years, and the Avalanche have enough depth to spread the workload.
At +107, I’m getting paid a little extra to ask for that second goal. The danger is obvious: Colorado wins 3-2, everybody celebrates except the guy holding my ticket. I’ve attended that party before, and the refreshments are terrible.
Calgary will win a game eventually. I’m not interested in betting that it happens against this opponent.
I’ll take the stronger attack and the plus-money price. Put me on Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (+107).
