The Chicago Blackhawks and Vegas Golden Knights open the 2026-27 NHL season Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena. Chicago begins Year 2 under Jeff Blashill, while Ryan Craig makes his regular-season debut behind the Vegas bench.
Puck drop is scheduled for 10:30 PM ET on ESPN.
Vegas enters Opening Night after going 39-26-17, winning the Pacific Division and advancing all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. Chicago finished 29-39-14 and missed the playoffs, but the Blackhawks spent the offseason adding experience around a young roster.
Vegas opens another Cup chase at home while Chicago arrives with considerably more interesting toys than a year ago.

One of those additions is a familiar face. Patrick Kane is back in Chicago, while Bowen Byram arrives to become a major piece of a young Blackhawks blue line.
There is one enormous absence.
Connor Bedard will start the season on injured/non-roster with an upper-body injury. That leaves Chicago without its biggest offensive weapon against a Vegas team that has spent most of its existence making life fairly unpleasant for rebuilding clubs.

That final meeting is worth remembering, but Chicago’s Opening Night lineup looks considerably different now. Vegas has changed too after another long postseason run and a notable summer.

Golden Knights Stats
Vegas scored 264 goals last season and still has an imposing collection of forwards. Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner, Mark Stone and Tomas Hertl give Craig several combinations to throw over the boards.
That’s not a bad place for a first-year head coach to start.
The biggest departure is Pavel Dorofeyev, who led Vegas with 33 goals last season before being traded to the Rangers. Victor Olofsson was brought back to help replace some of that production, while Trevor Connelly earned a spot on the Opening Night roster.
Vegas can create offense from the back end too.
Shea Theodore remains one of the league’s better puck-moving defensemen, and Rasmus Andersson gives the Knights another dangerous option. With Eichel and Marner driving play up front, there shouldn’t be many shifts where Chicago gets to relax.
The Knights are coming off a 95-point season and another trip to the Stanley Cup Final. Expectations in Vegas haven’t exactly become modest.
Blackhawks Stats
Chicago’s Opening Night roster has a different look, beginning with Kane’s return and Byram’s arrival. Byram is expected to take on No. 1 defenseman responsibilities after producing 42 points for Buffalo last season.
Chicago paid a significant price to get him because the Hawks believe he’s ready for it.
Bedard is missing, but Chicago finally has enough young talent that one injury doesn’t leave the entire offense wearing a name tag.
Anton Frondell should receive a larger opportunity with Bedard sidelined. He produced nine points in his first 12 NHL games last season and enters Opening Night with a chance to handle meaningful minutes down the middle.
Frank Nazar, Nick Lardis and Roman Kantserov add more youth around him.
Then there is Kane.
The 37-year-old isn’t being asked to recreate 2013, which seems reasonable. Chicago needs his puck skills, experience and ability to create offense for a group that scored only 226 goals last season.
Blackhawks vs. Golden Knights Goaltending Matchup
Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom make up Chicago’s Opening Night tandem. Knight went 19-25-11 with a 2.82 goals-against average, .902 save percentage and three shutouts last season.
He’ll need help against this Vegas attack.
The Knights carry Carter Hart and Adin Hill into the season. Hill is trying to bounce back after an inconsistent year, while Hart gives Vegas another experienced option in the crease.
The larger concern for Chicago is everything happening in front of its goalie.

Eichel, Marner, Stone and Hertl can force a young defense into difficult decisions, and Theodore or Andersson joining the rush only creates another problem. Chicago can’t spend Opening Night chasing the puck around its own zone.
The Hawks do have enough offensive talent to make this more interesting at the other end.
Kane adds another playmaker, Byram can activate from the blue line, and the younger forwards should get opportunities with Bedard unavailable. Chicago doesn’t have to win the game to contribute to the scoreboard.
That matters with a total of only 5.5.
Chicago Blackhawks vs. Vegas Golden Knights bottom line: Vegas owns the deeper and more dangerous lineup, but Chicago has added enough skill to threaten at the other end, giving this opener more offensive upside than the heavy moneyline might suggest.

Here is my Blackhawks Golden Knights free pick: I’m taking Over 5.5. Vegas still has plenty of firepower after reaching the Stanley Cup Final, and Chicago’s young lineup has more ways to answer than it did a year ago.
The Knights can roll Eichel, Marner, Stone and Hertl at a Chicago defense that allowed 268 goals last season. Theodore and Andersson give Vegas another layer of offense from the blue line.
Five and a half doesn’t require a Canadian pond-hockey special, eh! We just need both teams to participate.
Bedard being out obviously removes Chicago’s biggest weapon, but Kane’s return adds another creator to a group with Nazar, Frondell, Lardis and Bertuzzi. The Hawks don’t need to match Vegas chance for chance to help this number.
Vegas also has questions in goal after Hill’s uneven 2025-26 season, while Chicago’s young defense is still growing up on the job. I see enough scoring paths on both sides to get us past a relatively friendly total.
