The Chicago Blackhawks surprised some last year in getting a qualifying round win over Edmonton, but they’ll have their work cut out for them facing the defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay on opening night.
Tampa Bay did suffer a blow in the offseason in finding out that Nikita Kucherov will miss most or all of this shortened regular season. The Lightning are still a pretty deep and talented team however.
Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks are in no man’s land, somewhere between a championship window closing and a rebuild. Chicago still has one of the most talented scorers in the league in Patrick Kane and the leadership of Jonathan Toews though.
Chicago is also developing some young talent, and their season will ride on the performances of Alex Debrincat, Dylan Strome, Dominik Kubalik, and Kirby Dach.
One area where Chicago is no Spring chicken is on defense, where 37 year old Duncan Keith and 35 year old Brent Seabrook seem to be slowing down. That’s not good considering Chicago’s uncertainty in net.
Tampa Bay Lightning
The Lightning were the #1 scoring team in the league last season, netting 3.47 goals per game. The Blackhawks no longer have Corey Crawford (retired) or Robin Lehner (Vegas), so expect the Lightning to light the lamp here.
The loss of Kucherov hurts, but Tampa Bay still has Brayden Point (64 points) and Steven Stamkos (66 points). Viktor Hedman (55 points) is arguably the best defenseman in the league, and can neutralize Kane in this matchup.
While Chicago doesn’t no what to expect in net, the Lightning have old reliable in Andrei Vasilevskiy. The veteran goaltender was 35-14-3 last year, ranking 7th in GAA.

Free Chicago Blackhawks vs. Tampa Bay Lightning NHL Prediction:
It doesn’t take a genius to think Tampa Bay wins this one big. There could be such a thing as a championship hangover, but Tampa Bay is just too good and Chicago is just too unproven in net.

Tampa Bay is amazing at home, even if there are no fans in attendance for the opener.
