When it comes to the Connor Bedard sweepstakes, the Chicago Blackhawks are in the thick of it. They’ve been one of the worst teams in hockey all season and that stands true heading into this match-up.
On the other end of the ice is last year’s President’s Trophy winners in the Florida Panthers. They were expected to follow up last year with something resembling their noteworthy performance but it’s been a bit of a struggle for the club to gain traction.
They’re currently on the outside of the playoff picture with 70 points to their name but if they’re able to string a few together, that could all change.
Chicago Blackhawks
Just days prior to the deadline, the Blackhawks traded their main offensive driver and one of the franchise’s all-time greats in Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers.
They also sent Max Domi and his team leading 49 points to the Dallas Stars for a pick and a player. No player on the Blackhawks has reached the 20 goal mark this season and no one is near the 50 point plateau.
Chicago has lost five of their previous six games and are sporting a 9-19-2 record away from the United Center with a 22-37-5 tally overall.
Offense
Overall, they’re averaging a league-worst 2.48 goals scored per game and have a bottom five power play that is operating at 17.2% on the season. They’ve struggled to generate shots on net this year with a second-worst 26.7 shots per game which correlates to their poor goals for per game average. As previously mentioned, they don’t have many options up front after trading away key players in exchanged for future draft picks and prospects.

Defense
On the back end, they traded away Jack McCabe to the Toronto Maple Leafs which won’t help their goals against average on the season. They’re currently have a 26th ranked offense after allowing an average of 3.55 goals against per game thus far. That’s partly due to the amount of shots they’re allowing per game with the fourth most at 33.9 against per contest. On special teams, their penalty kill sits at 22nd in the league with a 76.1% kill rate.
Goaltending
The Blackhawks haven’t rolled with a true number 1 goaltender for quite some time now and the guy that has had the bulk of the starts isn’t playing up to the billing of a true starter.
Petr Mrazek has gotten the nod a team leading 30 times this season and has a record of 8-18-2 with a 3.74 goals against average and a save percentage of .891.
His main tandem partner has been Alex Stalock who has looked better than his teammate with a 7-8-1 tally paired with a 2.70 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.
Overall, the club is sporting 23rd ranked .895 save percentage as a team this season.
Florida Panthers
With a 32-27-6 record on the season, the Panthers are 18-10-3 on home ice after winning back-to-back games at FLA Live Arena recently. They have a recent record of 3-1 with victories over Tampa Bay, Vegas and Pittsburgh. Florida allowed just a single goal against in each of those wins, outscoring the opposition 10-3.
Offense
While their offence isn’t operating at the insane level it was last season, it’s still operating at the 10th highest in the league right now as they’re averaging 3.37 goals scored per game. Add to the fact that they have the highest shots per game marker at 36.8 and it’s clear that they’re definitely not going to make it an easy night for the opposition.
When it comes to the power play they rank in the middle of the pack with the 15th best man advantage at a 21.2% success rate.
Leading the offense is newcomer Matthew Tkachuk who has 28 goals and 81 points in just 62 games this season.
Defense
Their defense has been a point of concern this season, especially when Aaron Ekblad has missed time due to injury.
Similar to their goals for average, the Panthers rank 10th in terms of both highest goals against per game average, with 3.34 an outing, and 32.2 shots against per contest.
As for their penalty kill, they rank 5th last with a 74.2% conversion rank.
Defenseman Brandon Montour has generated the most points from the back end for the Cats with 11 goals and 51 points on the year.
Goaltending
Netminder Sergei Bobrovsky is slated to get the nod for the first game of a back-to-back and could get the crease for Saturday as well. Head coach Paul Maurice hasn’t been shy when it comes to starting a goaltender in both games with zero days rest. Add to the fact that Spencer Knight is currently in the NHLPA player assistance program indefinitely, Bobrovsky could see a 9th straight start.
Sporting a recent record of 3-1-0, Bobrovsky has a 20-17-2 tally and a 2.93 goals against average with a .907 save percentage on the season.
As a team, they have a 20th ranked save percentage at .896 on the year.

Free Chicago Blackhawks vs. Florida Panthers NHL Prediction
These two teams last met early in the season back at the end of October with the Blackhawks coming away with the 4-2 victory.
Now with Chicago looking to just finish the season out and the Panthers pushing for a playoff spot, I’m expecting a much different result this time around.
I’m taking Florida on the puck line and letting the Panthers’ top ten offense go to town on a dismal Blackhawks squad.
