Does it ever feel great to say that NHL hockey is back again! The NHL paused the regular season way back on March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. There are in total 189 games that will not be completed.
There are now 12 qualifying teams from the Eastern and Western conferences determined by points percentage in a “return to hockey playoff scenario”. Seven teams did not qualify.
There is going to be a TON of superstar talent on display as the #5 & #12 seeds matchup in NHL action Saturday, and both of these teams are looking to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2017.
Chicago won two of three between these teams in the regular season so there is a little revenge angle / narrative playing out here as well.
Chicago Blackhawks
I’m expecting to see Corey Crawford in net on Saturday afternoon. It can be argued that he is among the best playoff goaltenders over the course of his career. He has a .928 save percentage and a GAA of 2.77. Rest assured he’ll likely play a significant role in this series.
Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Duncan Keith lead the way for Chicago on the offensive side of things and they’ll be the major x-factors for me if the Blackhawks are going to pull this off.
Kane led the Blackhawks with 84 points (33 goals, 51 assists) in 70 games and has scored 123 points (50 goals, 73 assists) in 127 NHL playoff games.
Edmonton Oilers
Expecting to see Mike Smith in goal on Saturday. He has some playoff experience. In 2018/19 he played five games with the Flames. Over his career he’s 11-12-0 with a 2.17 GAA and .938 save percentage in 24 playoff games. In 2019 Smith has a .902 save percentage and a GAA of 2.95.
The Oil also have Mikko Koskinen, who has never played in the NHL’s postseason, although he did play very well in the KHL’s playoffs.
The Hawks aren’t great at killing penalties so it will be fun to see the Oilers power play exploit them here.
Six players had double-digit points on the Oilers’ man advantage, including McDavid, Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins, Neal, Klefbom, and Chiasson.
Edmonton’s power play was ranked first in the NHL at 29%, and its penalty kill was second at 84%.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Edmonton are 7-3 SU in their last 10 games against an opponent in the Central Division division.
- Edmonton are 6-0 SU in their last 6 games played on a Saturday.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Edmonton’s last 6 games at home.
- Chicago are 3-8 SU in their last 11 games on the road. (This is technically a road game)
Free Chicago Blackhawks vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL Prediction: Oilers ML
The Hawks are a trendy team to pick for the upset here but hold your horses. Even though they can score, Crawford missed significant time getting ready due to testing positive for Covid-19 so is he 100%? Also, the Blackhawks had statistically one of the worst defenses in the NHL this season.
PLUS they allow a TON of shots and the Oilers have just the duo to exploit the offensive zone in Draisaitl (110 pts) and McDavid (97 pts).
The Oilers will score, especially the top two lines. If their D can contain the Hawks weapons, they’ll be in good shape. This will be a great one to watch, but I have to wait and see on this one before I can pick the Hawks.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Back Edmonton -144, and parlay it with the UNDER 6.
**NOTE** – The 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers will begin Saturday, Aug. 1 in Edmonton and Toronto. The top four teams in both conferences will play a 3-game round robin for seeding in the First Round. The 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers will be best-of-5 series with the losing teams being entered into Phase 2 of the NHL Draft Lottery.
