The start for the Bolts was lacklustre but they seem to be back on track. Sitting at 6-4 after three straight wins they’re making hay in the Atlantic now.
Sitting in third place now behind only the Sabres and the Bruins who sit at the mountain top of the NHL, they are finally starting to play the way we have become accustomed to seeing them play.
Victor Hedman is currently day-to-day with an injury and his status is unknown for tomorrow but sounds like he won’t be suiting up. Which is an obviously crucial piece on their backend after they lost Ruuta this off-season among others.
Both of these teams going into this season have cup aspirations and yet both have been average statistically despite their recent win streaks, 2 for the Canes and 3 for the Bolts.
Both of these teams are more than likely to get going at top form but I do think the Lightning fading a bit this year is a serious possibility. This core has played more hockey than anyone in the last decade.
We always hear about the last 3 seasons because of how deep they have gone but this team has been in the playoffs for the better part of a decade, granted some first round exists notwithstanding.
So let’s dive into the battle between these two sun belt titans off to underwhelming starts shall we?
Carolina Hurricanes
One thing the Hurricanes have done incredibly well this year is have success on the road. They boast an impressive 4-1-1 record in other teams barns which is bad news for Tampa.
They are likely to start Andersen in this one who has had a start he wants to improve on no doubt. His line is 2.64 GAA and .896 sv%
It’s not terrible and he is still a great goalie but what’s important is that he can usually afford to struggle somewhat because of how good the Hurricanes are defensively.
They are second in the league at shots on goal allowed and 8th in goals against. They limit chances incredibly well and don’t spend a ton of time in their own zone.
Offensively this squad is not bringing their fastball right now. They are middle of the pack in both goals per game and shooting percentage.
But most shocking is how bad their powerplay has been so far, posting a measly 17% conversion rate on the man advantage which is 24th in the NHL. Yuck.
Tampa Bay Lightning
The Bolts really aren’t much better in those offensive categories. Their powerplay is only slightly better, shots on goal per game is far worse, but the most important metric in this specific matchup in my opinion is going to be the faceoff dot where the Hurricanes have a massive advantage.
The Lightning have struggled in the faceoff circle winning less than half of them. Their shooting % is still pretty good which indicates they aren’t getting as many opportunities as they’re used to which is going to be even worse if you start each play without the puck.

One very surprising point of the Lightning’s slow start was also the play of Vasilevsky who was looking shaky early. During their recent heater he has looked much better but he’s letting in some weak ones right now and not looking like the netminder we know and love.
I like the Hurricanes to give him and the Victor Hedman-less defensive core more than they can handle at home.
