The Carolina Hurricanes have soared to the top of the Metropolitan on the heels of an 11-game win streak. Carolina didn’t lose a game in regulation the entire month of December (12-0-1) and have kicked off 2023 with a victory 5-4 in a SO with New Jersey.
The New York Rangers have dropped to 10 points back from Carolina in the division, but what do you do when a team you’re chasing doesn’t lose? The Rangers have picked up points in 8 of 10 (7-2-1) and have still lost ground heading into the Hurricanes vs. New York matchup.

Tuesday night’s game can be a milestone one for Carolina, who with a win could set the franchise record with 12 straight wins while also giving coach Rod Brind’Amour his 200th victory.
Carolina has built up a 7-point lead over New Jersey in the division, but want to keep winning to tie the Devils’ NHL leading 13-game win streak. This is also a revenge game as the Hurricanes blew a 2-0, then a 3-2 lead before losing in 7 games to the Rangers in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

The Hurricanes haven’t really been an offensive juggernaut this season ranking 20th in the league in scoring (3.1 goals/game), but they’ve found their luck at that end lately scoring 4+ in five of their last six.
What Carolina could look for on Tuesday is a little more defensive consistency out of goaltender Antti Raanta. Sure he’s been great in SO wins over the Blackhawks and Florida, but has also allowed 9 scores total to the Devils and Flyers just over his last four.
New York Rangers
Even when Raanta has struggled like he did against New Jersey and Philadelphia, he has been bailed out in a 5-4 and a 6-5 victory. It’s that kind of offensive support that has allowed the Carolina goaltender to be on a personal 8-game win streak.
One of the reasons you like New York in this spot is that they have the goaltender to avoid getting in those 6-5 or 5-4 high scoring affairs. Igor Shesterkin had just a 2.14 GAA in December and got rest in the Rangers 5-3 win over Florida on New Year’s Day.
Shesterkin has been in net for three of the Rangers previous four losses however, snapping a stretch in which he had won six straight. He did hold the Hurricanes to just four total scores in the three games of the playoff series that were at Madison Square Garden last Spring.
