Hurricanes vs. Canadiens Gameday
Carolina travels to the Bell Centre Tuesday night for a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference Final.
Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM ET. Rod Brind’Amour’s Hurricanes enter 1-1-1, while Martin St. Louis and the Canadiens are 1-0-1 heading into Montreal’s home opener.
Montreal owned the regular season. Carolina answered when the games started costing somebody a summer vacation.
The Hurricanes finally got their first win Saturday, beating Philadelphia 3-2 in overtime.
Sebastian Aho scored twice and added an assist, while Andrei Svechnikov picked up two helpers. Carolina dominated the shot count 40-18 before Shayne Gostisbehere ended it on the power play in OT.
Montreal’s Saturday night required considerably more chaos.
The Canadiens trailed Pittsburgh 5-1 before scoring four unanswered goals to force overtime. Tommy Novak eventually ended the comeback, handing Montreal a 6-5 loss but still leaving the Canadiens with a point.
There’s no shortage of recent history between these teams.
Montreal swept all three regular-season meetings in 2025-26 and outscored Carolina 15-8. The Hurricanes returned the favor when it mattered most, winning four straight after dropping Game 1 to take the Eastern Conference Final in five games.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Montreal Canadiens Odds & Last 5
Carolina opened as the road favorite at -120.
Montreal was priced +101, while the Hurricanes were +201 laying 1.5 goals and the Canadiens -249 taking the goal and a half.
The Hurricanes opened the season with a 1-0 overtime loss to Florida before falling 5-2 against Washington.
They looked considerably more like themselves in Philadelphia. Carolina controlled possession for long stretches, generated 40 shots and finally got its power play working when it needed it most.
The man advantage has supplied three of Carolina’s five goals.
Montreal opened its season with a 3-2 victory in Toronto before Saturday’s track meet in Pittsburgh. The Canadiens erased a four-goal deficit in the final 22 minutes, including two goals with Dobes pulled for an extra attacker.
That’s one way to make sure nobody turns the television off early.

Canadiens Stats
Montreal has scored eight goals through its first two games.
Nick Suzuki leads the way with a goal and three assists. Cole Caufield already has three goals, including two during Saturday’s comeback against Pittsburgh.
Lane Hutson has chipped in three assists.
The Canadiens showed how quickly their skill can turn a game against Pittsburgh. Suzuki set up two goals in 24 seconds with the extra attacker on the ice, rescuing a point from a night that looked dead and buried.
Dobes has handled the entire early workload in net.
He started both road games and is slated to get the crease again for Tuesday’s home opener. He also knows this opponent better than most goalies would like this early in October.
Dobes went 3-0 against Carolina during the 2025-26 regular season. He posted a .922 save percentage in those meetings, stopping 95 of 103 shots. The Hurricanes eventually solved that problem in the playoffs, but his regular-season work against them wasn’t exactly subtle.
Hurricanes Stats
Carolina has scored five goals through three games.
Aho owns three of them after scoring twice against Philadelphia. Svechnikov has three assists, while Gostisbehere supplied Saturday’s overtime winner.
The power play has carried much of the early scoring load.
Three of Carolina’s five goals have come with the man advantage, including the tying and winning goals against Philadelphia. At five-on-five, the Hurricanes still have another gear to find.
Carolina finally found its game in Philadelphia. Finding the net a little more often would be a nice sequel.
The shot volume is more encouraging than the goal total.
Carolina put 40 pucks on net against Philadelphia while allowing only 18. That’s much closer to the possession-heavy Hurricanes team Brind’Amour wants than what showed up during the first two games.
Hurricanes vs. Canadiens Goalie Matchup
Dobes is slated to make his third consecutive start for Montreal.
He stopped 24 of 30 shots in Pittsburgh after opening the season with a win in Toronto. Saturday wasn’t pretty statistically, but St. Louis is going right back to him for the home opener.
Carolina’s crease remains the question.
Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 16 of 18 shots in Philadelphia in his first regular-season appearance since December 2025. Brandon Bussi started the Hurricanes’ first two games.

“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Kochetkov occupied the crease typically used by Carolina’s next starter during Monday’s practice.
That makes him a reasonable possibility for Tuesday, but the Hurricanes specifically noted that the practice indicator isn’t as reliable as it once was. Until Carolina names the starter, there’s no reason to turn a clue into a fact.
Montreal has certainty with Dobes. Carolina has two legitimate options and a decision still to make.
Carolina Hurricanes vs. Montreal Canadiens bottom line: Montreal brings home-opener energy and plenty of offensive skill, while Carolina arrives looking much more like the possession-heavy team that finally took control in Philadelphia.
Carolina Hurricanes vs. Montreal Canadiens Hockey Betting Trends
- Montreal has gone over the total in 1 of their last 2 games this season.
- Also, the Canadiens have a 1-1 record in their last 2 games this season.
- Carolina has a 1-2 record in their last 3 games this season.
- The Hurricanes have gone under the total in 2 of their last 3 games this season.
- Plus, Montreal was 1-1 straight-up against Pittsburgh and Toronto in their last 2 games.
- Carolina went 0-1 straight-up in their only home game this season against Washington.
Hurricanes Canadiens Free Pick: Under 6.5
Here is my Hurricanes Canadiens free pick: I’m betting Under 6.5 (-121). Carolina has played two of its first three games under this number, and I’m betting the Hurricanes drag Montreal into something a lot less entertaining than Saturday’s circus in Pittsburgh.
The Canadiens can absolutely score. They also needed two extra-attacker goals in the final 68 seconds to turn that Pittsburgh game into a five-goal night.
I’m not chasing that scoreboard.
Montreal wants another track meet. Carolina’s job is to hide the running shoes.
The Hurricanes showed against Philadelphia what this looks like when they’re playing their game. They owned the puck, dictated long stretches and gave up only 18 shots.
That’s my path to the under.
Carolina doesn’t need to shut Montreal out. I need the Hurricanes to keep the Canadiens from getting repeated rush chances and make them grind through five-on-five possessions instead of letting this turn into another last-goal-wins contest.
And I’m getting 6.5 to work with.
That’s the part I really like. A 3-2 game is beautiful, 4-2 still pays, and I can even survive a little late nonsense without immediately throwing something at the television.
Montreal’s home opener should be loud. Let everybody else bet the emotion and Saturday’s five goals.
I’ll take the extra goal of breathing room and root for boring.
Give me Hurricanes-Canadiens Under 6.5 (-121).
