With the season on the line, it’s do-or-die for the Carolina Hurricanes.
They’ve made the Conference Finals three times dating back to 2009 but the problem hasn’t been getting there, it’s been winning. In their two previous visits to the third round, they were swept and are just a single loss away from a hattrick of horrible history.
Down 3-0, they’re looking to become just the fifth team in NHL history to climb the comeback mountain.
On the flip side, the Panthers are just a single win from their first Stanley Cup Finals berth in 27 years and the second in franchise history.
After squeaking into the playoffs at the end of the regular season as the No. 8 seed, they’re looking to replicate what the Los Angeles Kings did during their 2012 Stanley Cup Championship season.
Coming into this series, the Hurricanes had lost just three games in this year’s postseason. Now, after losing three straight, they’ve got their backs against the wall. They’ve outshot the Panthers by a considerable amount and you could argue that they’ve also outplayed them as well. Yet, they still find themselves in a big hole and need to find a ladder fast.
With an 8th ranked offense, the Hurricanes are producing an average of 3.07 goals scored per game this postseason. They’ve outshot the Panthers 135-103 in three games and when it comes to their 9th ranked power play, they’re operating at a 19.2% success rate.
Sebastian Aho leads the team with 12 points in 15 games while he is tied with three other Hurricanes for the goal lead at 5 a piece.

Carolina is tied for the overall best defense in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a goals against average of 2.43. Their penalty kill is the best in the playoffs at 87.5% after surrendering just three goals through the first two rounds. When it comes to round three, they’ve given up two in the last three games alone.
Frederik Andersen should be considered their starter even though they went with Antti Raanta following the crazy quadruple OT finish in Game 1.
Freddy has finished each of his last four games with an individual goals against average lower than 1.79 and a save percentage of .931 and above in each contest. Overall he has a stat line of 5-2 with a 1.58 goals against average and a .937 save percentage in this year’s postseason.
The Panthers a just one win away from getting the brooms out and completing their first sweep in franchise history. They’re on the verge of defeating three of the top four seeds in the Conference and have lost just once since Game 4 of the first round.
Despite three extremely tight games, the Panthers offense has been able to find the back of the net. Overall, their offense is tied with Carolina for the 8th best offense at 3.07 goals scored per game. Their power play ranks sixth with a 25.6% conversion rate this postseason.
Matthew Tkachuk leads the offense with 19 points and is tied with Sam Reinhart for the team lead with 7 goals through 15 contests.
Their defense is tied for fourth with a 2.67 goals against average per outing and their penalty kill ranks 13th with a 68.8% kill rate. They’ve allowed a total of three goals against in the conference finals.
Sergei Bobrovsky has been on an insane run. He’s turned aside 67 straight shots and has stopped 109 of the last 110 he’s faced.
Bobrovsky stopped 132 of the last 135 shots he’s faced which is the most saves in the first three games of a Conference Finals series in league history.
Through his last eight games, he hasn’t given up more than two goals in an outing and has a save percentage of .958. Through his past four starts, he is 4-0 with a .973 SV% and 0.89 GAA.
Not to mention, this is a goaltender that loses a reported 15-20 pounds per game and that’s without the extra overtime.
Overall, the netminder has a 10-2 record with a 2.15 goals against average and a .935 save percentage.

Through three Conference Finals games the Panthers have scored 3, 2 and 1 goals in each contest while the Hurricanes have been held to just three total.
Bobrovsky may not keep up the insane pace he’s on but I don’t see him, or his defense, backing down in this game.
Carolina’s offense has failed them and it may be too late for them to find their form.
Take the under, it’s where it’s going.
