Carolina was a long shot to even win a game in this series against Boston, who had 100 points even in the shortened season. The ‘Canes went to OT before losing in game one and were victorious in game 2, but it’s been all Bruins since.
Boston is set to finish off Carolina and move onto the conference semifinals. The Bruins have won 9 of the last 10 in the head to head matchups and seem to have put some reset rust behind them.
Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina has made it close, but just doesn’t have the firepower to contend with a very talented Bruins team. The Hurricanes posted a 3-game sweep of the Rangers in the elimination round, and 2 of 3 losses to Boston have been by one goal.
The Hurricanes use a two-headed monster in net and some would say if you have multiple goaltenders you actually have none. Both James Reimer and Petr Mrazek are getting pelted, each facing 33+ shots in two starts.
With Reimer in net on Monday, it will likely be Mrazek’s turn to face the Bruins. He was solid in net in game three allowing just 2 goals on 38 shots before the Bruins allowed an empty netter late.
Boston Bruins
There’s one team in every Eastern Conference series that has at least three wins so Boston knows the importance of not letting this series draw out. The Bruins are a veteran powered team, and any extra rest is important.
Boston would also like a close out win for some confidence. They’ve been in mostly close games with a team that had 19 fewer points than them in the regular season. The Bruins were also 0-3 in the round-robin seedings.
One reason to maybe like Carolina on Wednesday is because Tuukka Rask has left the team to help tend to their 4-month old daughter. Jaroslav Talak has taken over, but allowed 3 goals on 19 shots on Monday after a solid game 3.
