Calgary is a bit of an underdog traveling to visit the defending Stanley Cup Champions on Thursday in St. Louis. The Flames are a paltry 4-8-1 going away this season against a Blues team that is 6-2-3 at home.
Even though favored and at home, the Blues are no sure thing on Thursday having dropped 3 of the last 4. The St. Louis is in a rut and thus we see a total on the low side at 5.5 for this one.
Calgary Flames
Speaking of offenses not exactly impressing as of late, the Flames bring basically nothing to the table on that end of the ice on Thursday. Calgary lost 2-3 at home vs. Colorado on Tuesday – and that was one of their good showings.
Prior to Tuesday’s game, the Flames had netted a total of 1 puck in their three games prior. They were shut out in their last two road games, November 16th at Arizona and the next night in Vegas.
Calgary is up against a Blues defense that has held 3 of the last 6 opponents to 2 goals or less. St. Louis boasts a top 10 defense in both SOG against and GAA. How is Calgary going to score here?

The Flames best chance at cashing in at +135 is in a low scoring game. Calgary was shut out 0-6 in Vegas two games ago, but that was with Cam Talbot stopping just 31 of 37 shots. David Rittich gets the nod vs. St. Louis.
Rittich has lost 2 straight games and both contests in which Calgary was the favorite. He was solid prior to that however with 4 wins and an OTL in the 5 preceding games. Rittich has the 2nd most saves in the NHL (512).
St. Louis Blues
St. Louis should be able to get the win in a low scoring game on Thursday. The Blues offense has been held to 2 goals or less in 3 of the last 4, and St. Louis was a -160 or better favorite in 2 of those contests.
The ‘under’ has hit in 5 straight games for St. Louis and on paper you’d think that was due to their under 30 SOG per game average. On Tuesday vs. the Lightning though the Blues had 18 SOG in the 2nd period alone and they fired up 38 the game prior against Anaheim.
One thing that does help the Blues is that they won’t be inclined to be in the ‘look ahead’ game with Nashville due up on the schedule the next 2. The Predators are in the midst of a 5-game losing streak and are 2nd to last in the Central.

Even though the St. Louis offense has seen their share of struggles as of late, they should be able to ride their defense to a win on Thursday. The Blues’ rank in the top 10 in GAA and SOG against and the Flames offense poses no threat right now.
Jordan Binnington gets the nod on Thursday (likely), having allowed 2 goals or less in 7 of his last 10 appearances. Binnington is 10-3-2 on the year.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Flames are 5-0 last 5 Thursday games
- Flames are 4-12 last 16 road games
- Flames are 2-9 last 11 vs. Central
- Blues are 11-3 last 14 vs. Western Conference
