The Oilers are primed for the playoffs and look like they could be a scary foe to face come the postseason given the serious star power they have in their ranks and they will be feeling confident they can take down the Flames here on home ice.
Calgary Flames
The Flames were actually not that bad against the Winnipeg Jets in their last game despite losing 5-1 and they really should feel like things need to turn around sometime in terms of their efficiency in front of goal.
The Flames also do get a bit of a break coming into this matchup, as their last scheduled match against the Vancouver Canucks had to be postponed and at this stage of the season that extra day of rest can make all of the difference.
Jacob Markstrom looks to be getting the start here and although his numbers are pretty average with a GAA around 3 and a save percentage around .900 I have liked what I have seen from him at times and believe he is up for the challenge of McDavid and Draisaitl.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers have much less rest coming into this game off the back of an unsuccessful East coast road trip where they went 1 and 2 with a particularly bad 4-0 loss against the Montreal Canadiens in their last game.
It has mostly been the McDavid and Draisaitl show this year, as expected, but their have been a few other guys who have been stepping up on the offense with guys like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who has 27 points on the season making important contributions to the team.
That also holds true for this team’s blue-line as Tyson Barrie and Darnell Nurse are both routinely involved in the goal scoring, so the Oilers may be able to present some problems for other teams in the playoffs just given how many guys they have who can put up numbers.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Flames are 7-16 in their last 23 vs. a team with a winning record.
- Flames are 3-7 in their last 10 games as a road underdog.
- Flames are 4-11 in their last 15 games as an underdog.
- Oilers are 4-1 in their last 5 games playing on 2 days rest.
- Oilers are 7-2 in their last 9 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days.
- Oilers are 10-3 in their last 13 vs. a team with a losing record.
- Flames are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings in Edmonton.
Free Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL Prediction:
Despite me being a little bit worried that the Oilers may be a bit flat here because of the travel and the schedule they have had lately, I still think they can get the job done on home ice, as they are the superior team to Calgary and the Flames have awful numbers when playing in Edmonton.
Although I have liked the look of Markstrom at times this year, I still think Mike Smith is the better of the two as it stands right now and can see him having a decent enough performance against a Flames team whose offense can disappear at times.
