Both the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers should be well rested heading into Wednesday night’s tilt at Rogers Place. This is the first game back from the all-star break for each squad.
The Oilers do get a slight lean right off the bat in this one a) because they are at home and b) because they won two straight prior to the break. Even so, the two teams are tied at 57 points on the season.
It’s a nice momentum booster for whoever is victorious in this matchup as Vancouver sits in 1st in the Pacific with 60 points.
Is Calgary refreshed after the all-star break? They had a nice run of five wins in a row to kick off January but hit a skid before the layoff with losses in 2 of the last 3.
The last time we saw the Flames in action, it was a very unforgettable appearance in a 2-5 loss to Ottawa as -164 road favorites. It was another poor offensive showing for Geoff Ward’s team who ranks 25th in goals scored on the year.
The total for Wednesday’s game is 6, which could seem on the high side considering Calgary’s woes in scoring lately. The Flames have been held to 2 goals or less in 5 of the last 6.
As an attest to their defense, Calgary has won 3 of those 5 games while scoring only 2 goals or fewer. It should be a full rest David Rittich getting the nod Wednesday, trying to overcome losses in 4 of 6 prior to the break.
Edmonton could be a rare team that felt the all-star game layoff came at a very inopportune time. The Oilers had rattled off two wins in a row and victories in 5 of 6 before having to take the last 10 days off.
At the very least, Edmonton’s #1 power play scoring offense in the league is well-rested. The Oilers were on an offensive surge before the all-star break, scoring 4+ goals in 5 of the last 6.
Who does Edmonton go with in net on Wednesday following the big layoff? Mike Smith would be a good bet as he spent the previous two seasons with Calgary and has rattled off wins in five straight.
The Oilers could also turn to Mikko Rantanen – and if they do the ‘over’ looks that much better. Rantanen has served up 13 goals in his last three starts and hasn’t posted a save % above .900 in the last five.
Calgary’s lack of offense is too much to overcome in this one, especially if Smith gets the start vs. his old team.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Flames are 6-2 last 8 overall
- Flames are 1-5 last 6 Wednesday games
- Oilers are 5-1 last 6 overall
- Oilers are 4-1 last 5 home
Free Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL Prediction:
The Oilers would seem to be an easy play on Wednesday but Calgary has actually taken both in the series this season. The Flames have won 4-3 and 5-1 so far in splitting the home and home.
