The puck drops on day 2 of the NHL this Thursday with a full slate of 8 games. The Flames have a tough one to open their season in Colorado, as the Aves should be big time Stanley Cup contenders in 19/20.

The last time these two teams played the Avalanche blew the flames out 5-1. Can they repeat that performance in their home opener?

Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames are coming off an outstanding regular season last year getting 107 points and a goal difference in excess of 60.

They will be looking to have a better playoff run, though, as they were eliminated by this Avalanche team last year in the first round by a final score of 4-1.

The Flames will look for some early season revenge this Thursday and certainly have the roster to go toe to toe with this Colorado team.

The biggest question for this Flames team is the goaltending as Mike Smith is now in Edmonton.

Dave Rittich will take over as the starter and he was essentially responsible for saving the season last year as he was critical as a backup.

He does have a sub .910 save percentage average for his career, though, so it remains to be seen how he will respond to being the unquestioned number one.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche will enter the season with a ton of hype as they are +1200 to win the cup. They deserve to be such a low price as well as they have a stacked roster with one of the best top lines in the league.

Mackinnon, Landeskog and Rantanen formed a solid top line last year and will present a lot of troubles for NHL blue-lines this year.

Just like their opponents on Thursday the biggest question is the goaltending with Phillip Grubauer taking over the starting job.

Grubauer has been a solid backup and has good stats, but how will he respond to the pressure of the #1 position on a team that is expected to go deep?
