The Flames are in a tight battle for a Western Conference wildcard playoff seed. They currently sit 4th in the Pacific Division with 64 points and sit in the final playoff spot.
The Carolina Hurricane, on the other hand, are firmly out of the running this season, but have a young nucleus that GM Ron Francis will try to add to come the trade deadline.
It’s surprising not to see either Johnny Gaudreau or Sean Monahan atop the Flames’ stat sheet, but such is the case 60 games into the 2016-17 season. Those honors would go to Mikael Backlund, who has 41 points in 60 games played thus far.
Also near the top is rookie Matthew Tkachuk, who is tied for second with an identical stat line to Gaudreau, with 11 goals and 39 points. Leading the way in goals is Sean Monahan, with 19 on the year.
Defenseman Dougie Hamilton struggled mightily at the start of the year, which led to a lot of trade speculation and an idea that the Flames needed to revamp their backend.
Since being paired with Mark Giordano, Hamilton has been brilliant and now has 36 points on the year, the best of any Flames’ blueliner.
The goaltending of Brian Elliot, the off-season acquisition who was finally supposed to shore up the position, has been a disaster this season.
Luckily for the Flames, back-up Chad Johnson has stepped into the starting role and saved their season, with 17 wins and a .912 SV% and 2.55 GAA.
Carolina has a winning record, yet sit dead last in the Metro Division standings. Yes, they play in the best division in hockey, but the Canes have some real roster issues to address and are not yet close to contention.
There is a decent young core to continue to build around, namely on defense with Justin Faulk, Jaccob Slavin and Noah Hanafin.
They have just traded veteran Ron Hainsey to the Penguins for a second-round selection, which could turn into a useful future piece. More moves like this will be needed come the trade deadline.
Up front, Jeff Skinner leads the way with 20 goals and 39 points. The core of himself, Victor Rask, Sebastien Aho, Teuvo Teravainen and Jordan Staal are a decent start.
Carolina should be able to deal Lee Stempniak and others to contenders to add prospects or future pieces.
The goaltending has been a major area of concern this season, with starter Cam Ward owning a .904 SV% and a 2.66 GAA on the year.
Alex Nedeljkovic is the future, but is not quite ready to take the reins yet, and until he does, it is unlikely to get any better.

Free Calgary Flames vs. Carolina Hurricanes NHL Hockey Prediction:
The Flames will need to travel to a new time zone to faceoff against the Hurricane in an early game, not an easy task. While the Flames have a winning record on the road, the Canes have been better when on home ice.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Carolina ML
Also, Elliot could very well get the start in this game, so I like Carolina.
