There could be some potential trouble brewing in CowTown. The Flames are among the teams that had hot starts, had high expectations and are currently on an absolute schnide.
The Flames have now lost six straight games heading into a bout with one of if not the best and hottest squads in the NHL, the Boston Bruins, in Boston no less.
The B’s keep on trucking right now and look unstoppable, and just before I started writing this I read a report that McAvoy is roughly a week away from re-entering the lineup.
This would invigorate an already rock solid defensive unit that includes Matt Grzelyck who is playing the best hockey of his career, as well netminder Ullmark, also on the top of his game and has only one loss on the season heading into this one.
I am of the opinion the Bruins won’t stay at this clip for the duration of the year. I don’t consider them frauds but it seems like they are overachieving after running it back with the same roster as last year with the exception of re-introducing David Kreicji to the lineup.
Are the additions of him and the much improved goaltending enough to make them this wagon we’re seeing right now? Or are they a tad lucky to start?
I am not so sure of either just yet but either way they’re hot as hell and the Flames are ice, ice cold. So without further ado, let’s dive in and see if the Flames can end their skid on the road.
Calgary Flames
Sometimes when you’re on this kind of a cold streak in hockey hitting the road is exactly what you need. Get away from the wife, get away from the kids, get away from the girlfriend, just the monotony of your daily grind and get some good dinners and outings with the boys.
Maybe skip shuffles the deck and you have some road pops with your new linemates and look for some chem.
But the Flames just need anything to help spark them out of this funk right now. Nazem Kadri has remained productive but his newly acquired teammate Jonathan Huberdeau has struggled to get things going since becoming a Flame.
He’s far too good for this slide to continue and most analysts and hockey people agree it’s just a bit of a struggle for the Flames to find some chemistry right now plus they are missing the heart and soul of their blueline right now, Chris Tanev who is coming back soon potentially in this one.
Huberdeau unfortunately is now sidelined and is considered “day-to-day” with an injury so he will not be going in this one.
Boston Bruins
Boston is 1st in the league in goals per game at just over 4 expected. They are 2nd in the league in faceoffs, and 6th in shooting percentage.
They also have the best penalty kill and limit offensive chances all night long. Add the aforementioned incredible start for Linus Ullmark (who’s starting this game) that is an obvious recipe for success.
This squad is super happy with their game right now and with McAvoy coming back things are definitely looking up in Beantown. I am still not sold this team will end the year as top dawgs but we can’t of course rule it out right now with the way they’re playing but time will tell.
