Well, something has to give here. New Jersey comes into Tuesday’s game having dropped four straight games, but that pales in comparison to the Sabres, who have dropped 10 in a row.
Buffalo Sabres
Forget the win, Buffalo might just set a goal of scoring in Tuesday night’s matchup. The Sabres have been blanked in consecutive games, 3-0 against Pittsburgh and 6-0 against Washington.
The Capitals loss also happened on Monday night, meaning the Sabes’ will be on the quick turnaround vs. the Devils. Buffalo has now been held to 2 goals or less in 9 of their 10 losses during the current run.
New Jersey almost looks great in comparison to Buffalo, even though they are just 1-7-2 over their last 10. The back-to-back doesn’t help the Sabres, who have 41 wins and 100 losses in their last 141 on 0 days rest.
Carter Hutton went Monday vs. the Capitals, giving up 6 goals on 30 shots. That almost assuredly means Jonas Johansson on the back end, and that’s not good as he’s allowed 17 goals his last four appearances.
New Jersey Devils
You know a team is bad when 8-13-4 New Jersey is a whopping -160 favorite in any game. The Devils have been favored four times in 25 games, three of them against the Sabres.
What’s really unfortunate about Tuesday’s game is that in the five meetings these two teams have had this year, Buffalo is 3-1-1.
Another thing to note is that the Sabres were a bit healthier in those mid-to-late February matchups. The team has now been without former #2 pick Jack Eichel the last three and goaltender hasn’t played since the February 25th New Jersey matchup.
NJ has a couple decent goaltenders, but their win/loss records look horrible behind the 5th worst offense in the league. Mackenzie Blackwood has allowed 4 + in four of the last six, but Scott Wedgewood stopped 32 of 34 shots vs. the Islanders on Sunday.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Sabres are 6-20 last 26
- Sabres are 18-57 last 75 road games
- Over is 5-1 in Sabres last 6 overall
- Devils are 2-12 last 14 overall
- Under is 10-4 in Devils last 14 home games
- Sabres are 5-2 last 7 meetings
Free Buffalo Sabres vs. New Jersey Devils NHL Prediction:
Under normal circumstances Buffalo would be a nice underdog play here Buffalo has scored a point in four of the five meetings between the two (3 wins, 1 OTL).
The Sabres are on the back to back though, and their 2nd (actually 3rd) string goaltender has allowed at least 4 goals in four straight starts. The loss of Eichel makes a difference as well.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
If Johansson goes for Buffalo that’s about 80% of the betting total right there. The Sabres defense is fatigued, but New Jersey’s goaltenders don’t instill a lot of confidence lately either.
