Chicago desperately needed a win to stay in the playoff hunt when they went on a 3-game swing out West – they didn’t get it. How will the Hawks respond being back home, but now officially unofficially out of the postseason race trailing the wild card by 9 points with 16 games to go?
The Sabres are in a very similar spot as their opponents on Thursday. After a mid to late season collapse Buffalo has fallen to 11 point off the 2nd wild card spot. This was a team in 1st place in the conference in November.
Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres disappointing slide has continued lately as the team is just 2-7-1 over their last 10. That includes a 2 game losing streak and defeats in 4 out of 5. Buffalo does have wins over Pittsburgh and Washington in the last two plus weeks, but both games were at home.
Buffalo hasn’t won a road game since January 29th and that includes a loss in New Jersey. The Sabres are 11-18-2 on the road this season and although Chicago hasn’t been tearing it up at the UC, how motivated is Buffalo in this one (aka a visit to Rush St.)

Buffalo will trot out Carter Hutton in net getting the start for Linus Ullmark. Hutton is up against a solid Chicago offense with a Sabres defense that has allowed 22 goals in the last five games in front of him.
Chicago Blackhawks
Chicago’s biggest downfall has been their defense lately, and that’s an understatement. The Blackhawks have given up at least 4 goals in 8 of their last 10 games and it’s somewhat amazing that they’ve been able to win four games over that span.
Corey Crawford will be back in net Thursday for Chicago. He made his long awaited return from the injured list when Chicago was on the West coast but to no avail. Crawford engineered an OT win over Anaheim, but allowed 6 goals to the Kings, the last place team in the West.

The reason Thursday’s O/U is 7 is because for as bad as their defense is, the Chicago offense can hang in a high scoring affair. That being said, that offense has looked human lately, breaking 3 goals scored just once in the last five games.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Sabres are 0-5 their last five vs. team with a losing record
- Blackhawks are 5-2 their last 7 games as a favorite
- Blackhawks are 1-4 their last five overall
- Sabres are 0-8 the last 8 in Chicago
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 7
There’s not a number that’s safe on a Chicago ‘over’ lately. An under hasn’t hit in a Blackhawks game since January 22nd, a span of 15 games with one push.
NHL Free Score Prediction: Blackhawks 5 – Sabres 4
The Chicago offense should look better back at home.
