The Ducks are poised to make the playoffs for the fifth straight season, currently sitting in the second spot in the Pacific Division behind their California counterpart, the San Jose Sharks.
For all of the upside draft selections and acquisitions the Buffalo Sabres have made under GM Tim Murray, the Sabres will once again miss the playoffs for the sixth straight season barring a miracle.
Buffalo currently rank 22nd in goals per game at 2.5, a mark that is seemingly low for the offensive talent on the roster.
Their powerplay is the best in the league at a 23.6% efficiency rate and suggests that the 5-on-5 play doesn’t represent the true scoring talent.
Jack Eichel leads the Sabres with 48 points, which he has registered in just 49 games played. The former 2nd overall selection is the key figure to build around, as the #1 Center is amongst the best group of young NHL franchise players.
Evander Kane has 25 goals on the season to lead the club. He is a nice top-6 piece that could be dealt at the draft with one-year remaining on his contract and seemingly having fallen out of favor with management.
Ryan O’Reilly and Kyle Okposo are two recent acquisitions that have performed up to standard, with 46 and 43 points respectively. Another former 2nd overall selection, Sam Reinhart, looks like a solid second-liner behind Eichel, with 43 points on the season as well.
Rasmus Ristolainen headlines the Sabres’ blueliners with 43 points on the year.
The next best, Cody Franson, is set to become a UFA this summer along with Dimitry Kulikov, so this will be an area of focus of management in preparation for next season.
Anaheim will be an interesting team to watch after their year is done, with a glut of good young defenders where one is almost certain to be claimed in the expansion draft.
The Ducks will likely protect Cam Fowler, Sami Vatanen and Hampus Lindholm, who all signed significant deals and at the core of the backend.
That would leave youngsters Shea Theodore, Josh Manson and Simon Despres available.
One player who will certainly not be exposed to the expansion draft is Rickard Rakell, a star young player who leads the team with 30 goals on the season in 59 games played. Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler are the two Ducks’ forwards with 50+ points.
John Gibson owns a .921 SV% and a 2.28 GAA on the season along with a 23-16-8 record. The former top goaltending prospect is both the now and the future between the pipes in Anaheim.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Jack Eichel is top-10 in points per game this season

- Buffalo is 11-18-6 on the road this year
- Buffalo is 2-4-1 in February.
- Anaheim has a plus-8 goal differential on the year
- San Jose is 23-8-3 at home
