The Flyers seem like a strange underdog for Wednesday night’s meeting with the Bruins, at home and having won four straight games. There’s got to be instant value on Philadelphia in this spot.
Then again, the Bruins did sweep Philly over a two game set in Boston, winning 5-4 and 6-1 on January 21st and 23rd. Wouldn’t that mean the Flyers are in a revenge spot though?
Boston is no slouch. Since the two wins over the Flyers the Bruins have beat Pittsburgh, lost at Washington in OT, and then returned the favor in a 5-3 win at the Capitals on Monday.
The Bruins are going to beat on you on defense, and they’ve gotten to 3rd in the East by their success at that end of the ice. Boston has held opponents to 2 goals or less in 5 of 8 games.
You’d think the return of Tuukka Rask would be fueling Boston’s defensive prowess, and although the veteran has been good, Jaroslav Halak has the better GAA at 1.72 to 2.49.
Basically Boston has a chance no matter who they throw out in net any given night. They aren’t merely a defensive team either, netting 23 goals in the last five games. Maybe the right team is favored.
Wednesday’s tilt is set up to be a battle, and the Flyers aren’t an easy out as they look for their 5th straight win. This is especially true after falling to the Bruins in both games in Beantown 10+ days ago.
The Flyers did struggle in a couple OT wins over the Islanders in the last series. New York is tied for fewest points in the East but a good thing to come out of Sunday’s win was a hat trick by 20-year-old Joel Farabee.
It’s almost a wonder how the Flyers are doing this well on the year, tied for the NHL lead with 15 points. They’ve only had Sean Couterier for two games, and rank 30th in SOG and 31st in SOG against.
