It was all lining up for the Bruins to complete the “Gentleman’s Sweep” of the Panthers in Game 5.
They were on home ice and their Captain Patrice Bergeron was making his much anticipated return. It seemed as if it were meant to be for the President’s Trophy winners.
What they didn’t count on though was a bounce back performance from a starter who started the series on the bench. It was vintage Sergei Bobrovsky in Game 5 as the Panthers leaned heavily on their veteran netminder as they played fast a loose with the puck.
With a 4-3 OT victory in the books for Game 5 and Florida’s season still on the line, can they do it again?
Boston Bruins
The Bruins took Games 3 and 4 in Florida while holding the Cats to just two goals in each contest. Going back to the regular season, they’ve won eight straight on the road.
Going back to Game 5, they outshot the Panthers 47-25 and won over 62% of the faceoffs in this game with Bergeron going 69.0% in the dot.
Offense
Boston is averaging 3.80 goals scored per game and are top five on the power play with a conversion rate of 31.6% through five postseason games. As evident in their most recent game, they aren’t afraid to shoot the puck and are averaging over 35 shots per contest.
Taylor Hall has come alive in these playoffs, scoring five goals in the last four games with eight points to boot.

Defense
On the defensive side of things, they’ve seen an uptick in goals allowed compared to their play during the regular season. Heading into Game 6, they’re averaging 3.00 goals against but have a top five penalty kill with a success rate of 84.6%.
After setting career highs in assists and points during the regular season, Hampus Lindholm has yet to find the scoresheet in these playoffs. It could be a nod to the depth on defense for the Bruins in the sense that they don’t need to rely on his offensive output as others produce.
Goaltending
Vezina front runner Linus Ullmark allowed four goals on 25 shots in the overtime defeat. The uncharacteristic giveaway on the overtime goal will haunt the Bruins netminder for months to come, should they not get the job done here.
He has a playoff goals against average of 2.79 and a save percentage of .913
Florida Panthers
The Panthers are winless through their last four games at home are served up a tall task in attempting to force a Game 7.
In their two wins, they’ve scored more than twice but in their three losses, the defensive game by Boston has held them to two or fewer.
Quizzically, the two games they had the least amount of shots on net were the two that they won. Whether or not that is sustainable remains to be seen.
Offense
Florida’s offense is averaging 3.00 goals scored and their power play is operating at 15.4% with just two goals on 13 attempts.
Matthew Tkachuk is dragging his team into the fight and leads the team with 3 goals and 7 points through this series.
Defense
On the back end, they’re allowing 3.80 goals against while sporting a penalty kill that sits outside the top ten with a 68.4% success rate.
Former first-overall pick Aaron Ekblad has yet to hit the scoresheet but Brandon Montour has continued his offensive output from the regular season. Montour leads all Florida D-men with 2 goals and 2 assists thanks to his 14 shots on net.
Goaltending
It was the tale to two-Bobrovskys as the goaltender was dealt a loss in Game 4 after allowing 5 goals on 30 shots. He would then rebound in Game 5’s OT victory, which included a late breakaway attempt by Brad Marchand, en-route to stopping 44 shots.
Bobrovsky has a 4.12 goals against average and a .895 save percentage through three appearances.

Free Boston Bruins vs. Florida Panthers NHL Prediction
As much as I’d like to see it, I can’t envision the Panthers coming out ahead here. They’ve struggled at home and while they’ve gotten spurts of offense, it hasn’t been anywhere near consistent enough for me to put any belief in them.
Add to the fact that they went back to Bobrovsky for Game 5, I’d have to imagine he’d take over for this contest as well and stability is definitely not his middle name.
The the Bruins from Beantown to cover here and come out ahead on the puckline with an empty netter.
