Columbus will look to erase a horrible season last year when they welcome in the Boston Bruins for their home opener on Thursday night.
The Bruins, too, come in off a disappointing season as they failed to make the postseason as it came down to the final days of the season.
The Bruins have been frequent participants in the NHL Playoffs, but last season they could never get over the hump late in the season.
Now, they’ll enter the 2016-2017 season with a chip on their shoulder as they try to find a way to get back into the postseason and it’ll start with a road game here in Columbus.
Boston will start the season some gaps to fill, one in particular for Patrice Bergeron. The all star forward has been battling a lower body injury and is listed as day to day for the time being.
Without Bergeron, the Bruins will lean on David Backes, who will join Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak.
Defensemen Adam McQuaid and Kevan Miller will both be out as well, leaving this Bruins defense thin on the back lines.
With both out, expect Brandon Carlo and Rob O’Gara to make their NHL debuts here at some point Thursday.
Columbus Blue Jackets
One thing the Blue Jackets have going for them is their farm system.
Columbus will welcome in some new faces from the Cleveland Monsters, their AHL affiliate, who won the Calder Cup last season.
Columbus didn’t make much of a splash in the offseason, but they will have some young faces that could provide some spark.
The Blue Jackets will rely heavily on their draft picks from the recent years to progress and produce, as they try to help netminder Sergei Bobrovsky.
The Jackets goalie participated in the World Cup of Hockey for Team Russia and was spectacular. The show gave a lot of encouragement as the Jackets will really need him this season with such a young, inexperienced team.
There is a lot of question marks for this team and what buried them last season was a slow start. If they can get out of the gates early, they could be a dangerous team.
