Wednesday’s Bruins vs Colorado matchup looks like a meeting between the current Stanley Cup champions and the future title holders. Boston has ran through the NHL this season picking up points in 21 of 24 games and their 41 points is second only to New Jersey.
The Avs aren’t doing horrible at 13-9-1, but definitely not the pace they set last year while already falling into 4th place in the Central. To make matters worse it looks like Nathan Mackinnon could be out until next month after getting hurt in Monday’s loss to Philadelphia.
Boston Bruins
Boston continues to play by a pretty simple formula – lead the NHL in goals scored (4.0) and fewest goals allowed (2.2). On Wednesday the Bruins have to do something they haven’t had to do often this season, and that’s bounce back from a loss.
The Bruins suffered their first home defeat of the season on Monday in a 4-3 loss to Vegas. They still picked up a point since that loss came in a SO, putting Boston’s mark to 14-0-1 at TD Garden this season.
Boston has bounced back to win following each of their three previous losses this season, so they’ve been good about avoiding losing streaks this year – but that’s what happens when you only have three regulation losses all season.
Whether it’s Jeremy Swayman or Linus Ullmark in net for Boston, their job gets a lot easier with the Avalanche missing their leading scorer Mackinnon (34 points).
Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche have slipped from the #4 scoring team in the NHL last season down to 13th this year, which actually isn’t that bad considering they lost Nazem Kadri (87 points) to the Flames in the offseason and Gabriel Landeskog (57 points in 51 games) out for half the season following knee surgery.
The news doesn’t get any better for Colorado with the loss of Mackinnon, who left in the 1st period Monday and didn’t return. Mackinnon was off to a pretty hot start this month with two goals and four assists in three games, so that’s a big void to fill.
The Avs are obviously still very talented but Mikko Rantanen is now the focal point of opposing defenses when he used to be able to cruise alongside Mackinnon and Landeskog as arguably the best top line in hockey. Defenseman Cale Makar continues to shine as well, third on the team with 24 points.
Everybody feels the pressure of Mackinnon’s loss, including between the pipes where Alexandar Georgiev was struggling as it is. Georgiev has allowed 13 goals in his last three outings, but backup Pavel Francouz just faced these Bruins on Saturday and gave up 5 goals in a 5-1 loss at TD Garden.

4* Free NHL Betting Pick Bruins vs Colorado: Bruins -1.5 (+150)
Colorado has only played 8 of their 23 games at Ball Arena this season, so it will be nice to get back home after playing 7 of the last 9 on the road. That being said, there’s a buzzsaw coming to Denver on Wednesday in the form of the Bruins.
Boston simply doesn’t lose two in a row – not yet this year anyways and will all the problems the Avs are having in net right now the Bruins take this one easily.
