Two of the league’s leading scorers, David Pastrnak and Jack Eichel, will be taking the ice Friday night in Buffalo as the first-place Bruins take on the fifth-place Sabres. This will be the first of a two-game series between the teams, as they will play again in Boston Sunday night.

The last time these two teams played, the Bruins won 3-2 behind a two-goal effort from Brad Marchand.
Boston Bruins
The Bruins are having a magical season and are showing no signs of Stanley Cup fatigue. They’re nine points ahead of second-place Toronto in the division, and only four points back of the league-leading Capitals.
However, they have faltered in recent games. They’re 2-4-4 in their last 10, which includes a stretch where they lost five straight.
Their defense and goaltending have been the backbone of Boston’s success. They are second in the league in goals against and ninth in the league in shots against, all while posting the most shutouts in the league to date (with four).
Marchand is showing no signs of age, as he leads the team with 54 points. And, speaking of age, 42-year old Zdeno Chara leads the team in plus-minus, at +18.
Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres haven’t shown any year-to-year leap so far, as they still sit well out of playoff position. They are painfully average on both offense and defense, and don’t rank in the top-15 in any major statistical category.
Former second-overall pick Jack Eichel, out of Boston University, continues to be Buffalo’s engine. Eichel leads the Sabres in goals, assists, shots and plus-minus.
The Sabres are 4-4-2 in their last 10, most recently coming off of a 1-3 loss at Ottawa.
Buffalo only scores 3 goals/game while allowing 3.11. They also allow more shots than they take and only win about 45% of their faceoff opportunities.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Boston are 9-1 SU in their last 10 when playing on the road against Buffalo.
- Boston are 4-1 SU in their last 5 against Buffalo.
- The total has gone Under in 7 of Boston’s last 10 games against an opponent in the eastern conference.
- The total has gone Under in 5 of Buffalo’s last 6 home games against Boston
Free Boston Bruins vs. Buffalo Sabres NHL Prediction:
Boston is coming off of a huge home win against the defending champion Capitals, as six different Bruins scored on their way to a 7-3 final score. Tuuka Rask kept 39 of the Capitals 42 shots at bay, powering the team to victory and somehow overcoming the fact that the Bruins only got 15 shots off.
Meanwhile, Buffalo hasn’t really been good at anything, and their goaltending has been shady at best. The Bruins managed to win the last matchup despite being outshot 38-27, as Tuuka overpowered Buffalo’s Linus Ullmark.
Boston has been alternating goalies, between Tuuka and the Slovakian Jaroslav Halak. But Halak has proven just as dependable, as he’s 8-3-4 in his starts with a .924 SV%.
The last two meetings between these teams has ended 3-2. I don’t see how this game will be any different from past ones, and we should see a physical, low-scoring, grind-it-out type of matchup in Buffalo Thursday night.
Therefore, going with recent trends: I really like the Under, and Boston should continue their dominance of Buffalo and pull out their 10th victory.
