It’s a classic battle of a good road team vs. a strong home team when the Coyotes and Flyers tangle Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center in Pennsylvania.
This is a matchup of a 2nd place and a 3rd place team in their respective divisions. In that regard is the PHI -145 line a bit on the high side? Then again, the Flyers are on a 5-game win streak.
The Coyotes have been road warriors this season. One would think they’d have more of a home ice advantage with opposing teams coming to the desert but Arizona has a 9-3-3 mark going away this season.
While that away mark is impressive, overall though the Coyotes have lost 3 of 5. They were favored in 4 of those games too which makes the squad look like underachievers.
Overall oddsmakers have given a lot of respect to the Coyotes, making them favorites in 9 of the last 10 games. This is a squad that has climbed to 2nd in the Pacific though, just a point back from Edmonton in a very winnable division.
Arizona’s success this year has been predicated on their defense, and actually has come in spite of their offense. The Coyotes boast the league’s #2 unit in goals against, but are way up there at 25th in goals scored.
Antti Raanta gets the go of it for Arizona between the pipes. Darcy Kuemper had been on a roll for the Coyotes but Raanta has allowed at least 3 goals in 6 of 8. The total is just 5.5 for Thursday though.
The Flyers have been putting it together as winners of 5 straight. Philadelphia has gone 6-2-2 in their last 10 which has allowed them to climb within 8 points of the Capitals for 1st in the Metropolitan.
Philadelphia’s success as of late has largely been defensive driven. 4 of the last 5 opponents have been held to 2 goals or less against Alain Vigneault’s team.
The home team had won 4 straight in this series until the Flyers notched a 5-4 win in Arizona last November. It was Philadelphia’s 3rd straight win over the Coyotes although Arizona had won 4 straight prior to that.
Philly seems to be set to go to Brian Elliott in this one although they have two capable net minders with Carter Hart also an option in goal.
Elliott has only made road appearances in 5 of the last 6 games. The veteran has stepped up nicely with a 7-2 record on the year.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Coyotes are 7-3 last 10 road games
- Coyotes are 1-4 last 5 following a win
- Flyers are 5-0 last 5 overall
- Flyers are 6-1 last 7 as a home favorite
- Road team is 4-1 last 5 meetings
Free Philadelphia Flyers vs. Arizona Coyotes NHL Prediction:
The confidence is with the Flyers in this one. The -145 is manageable especially as Arizona likely turns to their #2 goaltender. Philly does too, but at least they are at home.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Flyers -145
Hard for a road team to break that winning momentum that the Flyers have found with their 5 game win streak.
