The Ducks continue their flight through the state of Florida with a meeting in the Panthers’ den on Wednesday night. Their wings have been clipped offensively throughout the season to date, we’ll see if a road trip on the opposite sunny coast is the tonic for what ails Anaheim’s goal-scoring travails.
Think of how bad the Ducks would be if they didn’t have phenomenal goaltender John Gibson. The 25-year old Pennsylvania native has put up a 2.57 GAA and a .926 save percentage and often single-handedly keeps his team in games. Need evidence? The ageing Ryan Getzlaf is leading Anaheim in goal scoring with six. The other offensive ‘dynamos’ are unknown commodities like Jakob Silfverberg and Rickard Rakell, and tenured scorer Corey Perry has been out for the year.
Indeed, Anaheim ranks dead last in the NHL in goals for, averaging just 2.16 per game. So it’s defending and puck-stopping that gets it done for the SoCal outfit, who still sit good for third in a surprisingly bad Pacific division. Anaheim is tied with Vegas for third, which isn’t an accomplishment so far. It’s maybe a stretch to say the Ducks should blow it up and get in the Jack Hughes sweepstakes, but this team looks like it’s on the unhappy side of the parabola that every pro team rides.
The Panthers have been another snake-bitten club so far in 2018-19. Florida is coming off a sturdying OT win versus the Devils, but before that it had lost five of its past six games. The one nice development for the Panthers this year has been Mike Hoffman. After Ottawa dumped him following the drama with Erik Karlsson (we don’t need to get into that here) he has once again shown why he’s such a well-regarded player, leading the club with 12 goals and 23 points.
The Panthers have also been enjoying blueliner Keith Yandle, as the 32-year old hasn’t remotely shown his age and has chipped in 16 assists to date. Florida got screwed over after losing veteran starting goalie Roberto Luongo, as the duo of James Reimer and Michael Hutchinson haven’t gotten the job done. If the south Floridians got some netminding, it might be a different story, but as things stand they sit seventh, second-last, in the Atlantic division.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Anaheim is 6-12 ATS in its last 18 games
- Anaheim is 5-13 SU in its last 18 games
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of Florida’s last 7 games
- Florida is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games when playing at home against Anaheim
Free Anaheim Ducks vs. Florida Panthers NHL Prediction:
Tricky to say because although Anaheim’s goal scoring is rough, if there’s one team the Ducks could make hay against, it’s the sub-par netminding of Florida. However, Hoffman is hotter than a Florida summer lately, and the trio of Jonathan Huberdeau, Sasha Barkov and Evgenii Dadonov have also been producing. I like the Panthers to make it two wins in a row on Wednesdsay night.
