Here’s a look at five teams you should keep your handicapping eye on as they make a run at the Stanley Cup.
Montreal Canadiens (NHL Odds +1000)
As if having the best goaltender in hockey weren’t enough, the Canadiens have been scoring the puck with great consistency to start the season. That’s been a big reason why the team’s been able to be as good as it has through the first month of the season.

Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec have led the team’s top line, and if they can continue to be as potent offensively as they have been, while secondary scorers like Brendan Gallagher and David Desharnais keep rolling along, and the top defense pairing of P.K. Subban and Andrei Markov remain elite, the Canadiens are going to be the team to beat come the spring.
New York Islanders (NHL Odds +1800)
The Islanders have had the goal-scoring aspect of things figured out for some time now. Captain John Tavares continues to keep the team among the league-leaders in goals scored year in and year out. But now the back end is in order with the return of a healthy Jaroslav Halak, who sports a sub-2.00 GAA with a pair of shutouts through five starts.
The team also ranks among the elite in both power play and penalty kill conversion percentages. That’s going to come in handy come the postseason.
Dallas Stars (NHL Odds +2000)
The Stars are another team that had things figured out at the offensive end, and now with the back end solidified, watch out.

Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn are setting the league ablaze with their dynamic play on the top line, while secondary scorers Jason Spezza and Patrick Sharp are as dangerous as any in the league.
The difference for the Stars has been the addition of goaltender Antti Niemi, who’s not only played great hockey himself, but he’s also lit a fire over incumbent starter Kari Lehtnonen, giving the team a starter-worthy goaltending option night in and night out.
Winnipeg Jets (NHL Odds +3000)
When things have gone right for the Jets, no team has looked more dominant. The team rosters the best kept secret in hockey in right winger Blake Wheeler, who’s averaging better than a point per game. Playing alongside Bryan Little and Andrew Ladd on the team’s top line, Wheeler is a lock to suit up in his first All-Star game.
The team also has dynamic rookie Nikolaj Ehlers who is making the most of limited playing time and is ready to break out. If head coach Paul Maurice comes to his senses and makes the move to Michael Hutchinson between the pipes, it’ll be full steam ahead in Winnipeg.
Boston Bruins (NHL Odds +5000)
Many wrote the Bruins off after their ugly 0-3 start on home ice, but Boston’s gone 6-0-1 since then, and they’re ready to keep that roll going. Goaltender Tuukka Rask’s figured out whatever led to his slow start, and his numbers are climbing back to what we expected from him.
The players playing alongside him are different, but top line center David Krejci continues to be a consistent source of points playing big minutes up front.

Patrice Bergeron’s always done it all for the team, and now he’s upped his profile as a scorer on the power play, finding the back of the net four times in 10 games.
