When Texas A&M fired Billy Kennedy after eight seasons it went out and hired Buzz Williams of Virginia Tech.
Tech replaced Williams with Michael Young of Wofford and the Terriers replaced Young with 35-year-old assistant Jay McAuley.
McAuley has since turned thirty-six but he’s just the latest young hire by a program on the rise. He played at Georgia and served as the graduate assistant there for a year after getting his bachelor’s.
From there, he worked under Young at Wofford for two seasons before going to Gardner-Webb then Furman. He returned to Wofford where he was again working under Young for the last two seasons.
As is often the case in these scenarios, the rookie head coach isn’t just facing a learning curve but the departure of significant talent.
Fletcher Magee, who averaged twenty a game for Wofford a year ago but finished his career by missing all twelve of his three-point attempts in a six-point loss to Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, is playing professionally in Spain.
Cameron Jackson, who averaged over fourteen points and seven rebounds, graduated.
Keve Aluma, a promising young power forward, followed Young to Virginia Tech.
Enough of a core from last year’s team came back to keep Wofford competitive in the Southern Conference this year but the Terriers have lost by at least fourteen points to all three of their biggest opponents so far this season: Butler, Missouri and South Florida.
North Carolina Tar Heels
It was two years ago, when Magee was Wofford’s leading scorer at over twenty-two points per game, that Wofford won at Chapel Hill.
Storm Murphy started and scored six points for the Terriers. Nathan Hoover came off the bench to score eight. Those guys are McAuley’s two best players this year.
Garrison Brooks started for North Carolina; Brandon Robinson and Andrew Platek came off the bench. Brooks doesn’t have a high ceiling at the power forward spot but leads this year’s team, along with freshman Cole Anthony.
Robinson and Platek haven’t done any more this season than one might have expected them to two years ago, had they the opportunity they’ve had so far this year.
After Brooks, Anthony and Robinson, the guy who plays the most minutes for Roy Williams is a sophomore by the name of Leaky Black. Black isn’t much of a shooter but does provide energy as a two-way player.

Free Wofford Terriers vs. North Carolina Tar Heels NCAAB Prediction: North Carolina wins, the game doesn’t get away from Wofford.
This handicapper expects a Carolina 1H/2H victory but not necessarily one that exceeds a final margin of twelve or thirteen points.
Respectively, North Carolina ranks 315th, 319th and 308th in the country in terms of team 2p%, 3p% and ft%. But a Roy Williams team still always defends.
