This Saturday afternoon Big 12 game will see the West Virginia Mountaineers take on the Kansas State Wildcats. These teams are trending in opposite directions, so it will be an important game for both sides.
Kansas State swept the season series last season.
West Virginia Mountaineers
The Mountaineers have now won three straight games after dropping their conference opener to the Kansas Jayhawks. Their only non-conference loss came to St. John’s, so they are still sitting in a great position to make the tournament.
West Virginia is not a high flying offense by any means, which is why they average just 72.1 points per game. In road games, this average goes down to 63.8. Both of their losses came on the road as well, so getting off to a fast start will be a must.
This Mountaineers team has three main guys who contribute to their scoring. Their leading scorer is Oscar Tshiebwe. Although is average is only 11.8 points per game. He also averages 9.6 rebounds per game. Second in scoring is Derek Culver. He averages 10.8 points per game, and leads the team with 9.8 rebounds per game. Miles McBride is also averaging in double-figures with 10.1 points per game.

Defense is a completely different story compared to their offense. They are the 9th best scoring defense in the country, allowing just 59.2 points per game. Teams shoot 35% from the field against them and 23.8%. Both of these rank 2nd overall in their respective categories.
Even though their offense has been lacking in road games, their defense has been able to step up. Away from Morgantown, the Mountaineers allow just 57.6 points per game. In conference games, defense has been even more impressive, allowing an average of 51 points per game.
Kansas State Wildcats
The Wildcats are really having a rough season, an unless they turn it around big time, they will probably not be making the tournament. They fell to 0-4 in the Big 12 after losing to Texas Tech in their last game. This game ended with a score of 77-63, so the Wildcats did not really put up much of a fight.
Offensively, the Wildcats are one of the worst scoring offenses in the country. They average just 64.5 points per game. In four conference games, this scoring average drops to 58 points per game.
The Wildcats do not have many great scoring options as they have just two guys who average 10+. Xavier Sneed leads the way with 14.6 points per game and Cartier Diarra averages 12.6 points. Between these two guys, it makes up 42.2% of their scoring. Both must have a great guy or Kansas State is going to be trouble.
In terms of points allowed per game, the Wildcats are not the worst. They allow just 61.8 points per game, which ranks 42nd in the country. Since the start of Big 12 play, they have allowed an average of 66.5 points per game.
Because West Virginia is not a high scoring team, the Wildcats should be able to have a decent defensive game as long as they limit their own turnovers.
