This is an MGM Resorts Main Event Heavyweight from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas between two smaller, yet quality, West Coast programs that have their fair share of experience playing these sorts of games in Vegas.
Virginia Tech Hokies
After three NCAA Tournament appearances in a row at Virginia Tech, Head Coach Buzz Williams bolted for Texas A&M after last season.

Mike Young took a big promotion in being named the new head coach, coming over from Wofford, where he built one of the newest, best mid-major programs.
He’s dealing with a very young team in the aftermath of all of the senior firepower that graduated in May. Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Justin Robinson are in the NBA; Ahmed Hill and Ty Outlaw graduated; Kerry Blackshear Jr. transferred to Florida.
That opened the door for a pair of freshman to lead this team in scoring, at least through its 5–0 start. Landers Nolley II is the #72 ranked freshman in the class of 2019 and is averaging over 20 points per game so far to lead the team. Naheim Alleyne is getting 12.6. The two Georgia natives are the only two double-digit scorers on the team at the moment.
But that 5–0 start sure looks good, especially for a new head coach. The Hokies started the season with an ACC win at Clemson so it feels good to be 1–0 and on the road no less. They also smashed Lehigh, which is traditionally a strong mid-major program in the Patriot League.
This will be a different sort of test, though.
Michigan State Spartans
Michigan State brings back much of the team that made that super Final Four run a year ago, beating Duke in the Elite Eight despite all the injuries.

First, the guys who aren’t back. Nick Ward declared for the NBA Draft a year early and didn’t get picked but is currently in the G-League. Kenny Goins graduated. Joshua Langford was set to return this season following his terrible foot injury last year but he re-injured the foot and his future is opaque at this point.
Cassius Winston is back and set to be the best player in the country. Xavier Tillman is back following his breakout NCAA Tournament. Gabe Brown and Aaron Henry will look to take leaps and bounds forward after successful freshman campaigns that saw them play well in limited roles.
Kyle Ahrens is also back and healthy enough to play at least 15 minutes a game, which is what he’s averaging through the first four games on the Spartans’ schedule.
And then there are always new names to step in for Tom Izzo. One of those guys this season is Thomas Kithier, a sophomore forward from Clarkston, Michigan who is averaging a modest 6.8 points per game through his first four games but shooting nearly 92 percent from inside the three-point arc.
