Villanova Wildcats
Villanova won its sixth in a row on Saturday, 64–60, in Providence, against the Friars.

It was ‘Nova’s second road victory in the Big East and advanced it to 16-3 overall and 6–1 in the conference standings. It is just a game behind Seton Hall and two clear of a pack of teams with three losses.
Collin Gillespie only made one-of-four three-point attempts but still found a way to be efficient in leading the ‘Cats with eighteen points and five assists. He hauled in eight rebounds, too.
Gillespie and freshman Justin Moore were the only two guards to see the floor for Jay Wright. The other six guys to play are all listed as forwards, including the super freshman Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, who had seventeen points on eight field goal attempts and shooting seven-of-eight from the line.
Villanova’s length bothered Providence, which shot just three-of-twenty-three from beyond the arc. We cashed our under with relative ease but were, perhaps, a little lucky to do so. Providence isn’t a great shooting team (which was a primary reason for making the play) but you expect more than three out of twenty-three to fall for any team at the collegiate level.
St. John’s Red Storm
St. John’s has started 2–6 in Big Easy play but it isn’t quite as bad as it looks.
The Johnnies dropped a home game by two points against Butler when the Bulldogs were playing better than they are now. Then it lost at Xavier, at Georgetown and got a win at home vs DePaul. It lost at Providence, dropped another home game by three to Seton Hall and lost at Marquette before beating DePaul again, this time on the road.
It probably won’t win many more road games this season but the Red Storm has been tough on good opponents at home, even if it hasn’t turned close games into wins. That will probably get better before it gets any worse.
All three of its double-digit scorers out-performed their averages in the weekend’s victory at DePaul. LJ Figueroa, Mustapha Heron and Rasheem Dunn combined to score sixty-one points and nearly outscore DePaul (66) as a trio.
All three are guards and a little smaller than whomever they will match-up with on the other side but not necessarily any quicker.
Villanova can play the four forwards because it doesn’t sacrifice any quickness for length. They can all guard the perimeter and close out shooters, as evidenced by Providence’s three-of-twenty-three over the weekend.
