There is no doubt these are the top teams in the A10 this season. The question is whether they can both find a place in the Tournament field. I think the answer is yes given their recent successes.

Dayton has the edge as they are a game up in the conference standings. This is the final home of the season for this very experienced team so it could be an emotional sendoff.

VCU Rams

The names and faces have all changed since that magical 2011 run but this is one of the best mid major programs in the country. There is no reason to think this year’s team cannot carry on that legacy.

JeQuan Lewis has developed steadily in his four years at VCU. This season he leads the team in scoring and assists but he was a no show in the road loss to Rhode Island in their last game.

Forward Justin Tillman is following in Lewis’s footsteps, improving every year. Just a junior he is the second leading scorer and top rebounder on the team. He was AWOL against URI too but has double-doubles in five of his last 10 games.

Mo-Allie Cox is the spiritual leader of the team. His numbers are never good but when he starts banging into people the team feeds of it. They will need that on the road.

Dayton Flyers

Dayton has a similar profile to VCU, though their best run ended in a regional final. They are an experienced team that is led by seniors who will be playing their last home game of their careers in this one.

The leader of that groups is Charles Cooke. He might have started his career at James Madison but he has been huge for the Flyers over the last two seasons.

Scoochie Smith and Kendall Pollard are two other seniors who will go down as among the best players in the history of the program and have won a lot.

These teams met in late January with VCU dealing the Flyers their only conference loss. You can bet this group will be looking for some revenge in this one.
