USC Trojans
Southern Cal lost its third conference game over the weekend, 78–57, at home to Colorado but it’s still no worse than any other team in the league, as far as the loss column is concerned.
Oregon has one more win but is idle until the weekend. The Trojans will pull even with the Ducks (and potentially Colorado, which plays on Thursday evening too vs Cal) for first place in the Pac-12.

USC has won at Washington State; it has won at UCLA and at Oregon State. It has home wins over Utah, Stanford and Cal. Before its loss over the weekend, Southern Cal’s only two losses came on the road: at Washington and Oregon.
Jonah Mathews (younger brother of former Gonzaga guard, Jordan) and Nick Rakocevic are the elder statesmen on this team, both seniors who have played a lot for Head Coach Andy Enfield over the last three seasons but are hungry for a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Trojans qualified when Mathews and Rakocevic were freshman but the dance wasn’t long.
Mixed in with the complimentary seniors are three highly-touted young players, a sophomore Elijah Weaver, who came in last season as a top 50 freshman, and a pair of freshman both ranked inside the top 20 in the class of 2019.
Onyeka Okongwu leads the Trojans in scoring at over sixteen points per game. He hasn’t made a three-pointer all season but he can score inside the arc, where he shoots .615. He also averages better than nine rebounds per game and makes opponents think twice before they penetrate to the basket with a wing-span and leaping ability that has helped him block three shots per game this season.
Arizona Wildcats
Also one of the five teams in the conference with three losses headed into Wednesday night, Arizona comes into this game riding a special two-game winning streak.
Prior to Thursday’s victory at Washington, Arizona had not won a game on the road all season. It was 0–3 away from the McKale Center in conference play but that has become a thing of the past.
Not only did U of A knock off the Huskies (who are 2–8 and in last place in the Pac-12), it trampled Washington State, 66–49, in Pullman over the weekend.
Graduate transfer Stone Gettings, who played three seasons for Yale and averaged nearly seventeen points per game for the Bulldogs in his last season there in 2017/18, led the Wildcats in scoring for the first time all season with nineteen points.
The ‘Cats shot only .397 from the field but held the Cougars to .370 and a dreadful three-of-eighteen from three.
Nico Mannion scored fourteen points and turned it over just twice, compared to four assists. He had a couple of steals and finishes in the open floor that helped Arizona win momentum early.
Arizona has the most advantageous schedule down the stretch, especially now that it has the road monkey off its back. The ‘Cats host the next two and then finish with four at home and four on the road but with Oregon at home and no more Colorado.
