The Bearcats might have punched their ticket to the big dance with their win over SMU to close the season.
UConn might be on the bubble but if they get to the conference tourney finals like they have the last couple of years it might be enough.
These are two teams that are definitely going to go at each other, last man standing Big East style.
Connecticut Huskies
The Huskies seemed to be less than the sum of their parts this season. I thought they would be better.
One area that was really strong was defense, they were in the Top Ten giving up just 62ppg. That is especially impressive given that Amida Brima missed a third of their games. This one might be the first to 50.
I am not sure why but the backcourt just never really came together this year. The trio of Sterling Gibbs, Rodney Purvis and Daniel Hamilton was solid but it could/should have been among the best in the nation.
Talented frosh Jalen Adams and Omar Calhoun weren’t much of a factor either. Any one of those guys could break out in this tournament though.
UConn has just as good a shot as anybody to get the conference’s automatic bid.
Cincinnati Bearcats
The Bearcats got a huge win to close the season over SMU. They are probably the favourites in the this tournament with the Mustangs ineligible.
Like UConn this is a very good defensive team. In fact they are better than the Huskies by the numbers. Scoring will definitely be at a premium in this one.
In terms of raw talent the Bearcats are probably not quite there with UConn but they seem to never take a possession off. It is not always pretty but this group is physical and aggressive from the first tip.
Offense can get pretty ragged for this group which often means that sometimes their best weapon is the offensive rebound. Troy Caupin is a nice player but hardly a real go to scorer.
The Bearcats only win a certain way so they are definitely a bet it and forget it kind of team. If you watch them they make you second guess yourself all night long.
